Lots of times the employers don't even fill that section out.

I've seen worse - I still have the screenshot somewhere.

It was a job requiring 5 years of experience in design and prepress (I've worked in digital prepress, but they also wanted paste up skills, stripping, and plate burning, as well as a few things that I hadn't even heard of in a work situation) PLUS a degree in graphic design, and they were offering the generous salary of $8 to $9 per hour.

Ads like that just eat at me to no end. I've even responded twice to ads like that and let them have it.

$8 to $9 an hour! Wow wee!

At the current UK exchange rate, hell even at a shody exchange rate that puts you under the legal minimum wage.

Minimum wage for over 18s in the UK is currently £5.35 which figures out to $10 ish an hour. Any less than that and your employer is breaking the law and is about to get a good old slap in the face from the government.

in NY the legal minimum wage had been $5.35 per hour for YEARS. Fortunately, they finally started to do something about it - over the past few years they raised it a bit at a time to $7.15 per hour. We are still one of the most highly taxed states in the US, and it was impossible to live on minimum wage unless you split an apartment with a few friends.

On top of that, certain industries are expected to make tips, so they are paid a lower hourly rate. For example, food service workers may earn $4.60 per hour because their total compensation includes expected tips.

I guess there are many countries where there is no tipping so our min wage is a bit higher. I hear that bartenders etc can make amazing tips right? Aren't there even places that don't pay a wage at all because of tipping yet people still line up to work there because tipping is so high?

Oh, yeah, when my sister was bartending, an old man tipped her a hundred dollar bill. When she tried to give it back, he said he didn't have anybody to give to anyway. My sister-in-law is bar manager and has money all over her floor at home where she stuffs it in her pockets and it falls out when she changes clothes. Hundred or two in change alone...

Yeah, I shoulda went to bartending school except I hate dingy rooms with cigarette smoke thick as molasses.

It's not the dingy rooms full of smoke where you find the tip money. It's in the clubs and upscale bars. Besides, most bars are smoke free. At least around here.

I'm always a good tipper. Even on a night when service might be slow. I'm never in a rush if I decide to go out for dinner. Besides, if you hang out in a place often, it's always a good idea to treat the people nicely who serve you your food. ;)
