I'm at uni right now learning German and we have to do a 10minute talk on a topic of our choice. There's not much in the way of criteria ...aslong as it's for ten minues (basically to show that we can stand in front of a class and talk in technical terms about something in German).
It would be pretty easy to go down the football route and talk endless baffle about the game, but instead and since I will be wanting at the end of my course to be using Graphic design-Illustration jargon in a job in Germany, it would make sense to start now and get a topic that is more career orientated.
It would be cool as fek if anyone out there had their creative hats on today and showed me the light with some sort of subject-ideas-sources-direction.
It's a big subject and I really want to try and keep it 10minutes. A very short time indeed!!!
Anybody got any experience out there with talks on GD while you were all at college or at uni?? Would be great to hear of any feedback!!

While at Uni we had to do a presentation on our work experience. I found it useful to have things to show people since just talking about design doesn't explain things enough. I had the audience pass around samples of the work I did during my work experience and sometimes people would hold up the pieces as I referred to them. Gets the audience involved. Are you allowed props like that?

sure am with props.
Have got a flip board thingy for some illustrations-graphs-charts etc ... But that's good with the interaction with the class.
I'm a lil lacking in the experience with the industry itself really so the "experience talk" would be a no-no.
Perhaps I should go for a graphic design brief history from scratch and tell the class about how the cavemen scratched things on cave walls etc ... and then give the class some examples about design and how it is literally all around us today and the importance of deign in our western world. Ahhhh. Such a big topic for ten minutes.

ich bin das unteraffe!
that's about the only german i know...
oh and 'zwei stein danke' lol
you should do a short intro into design and why it's important and then give them 10 dos and donts in design... but make it funny... (we've got a thread like that somewhere around here..) and make sure to stress 'never to use the font that shall not be named'... you have the opportunity to educate some people here.. use it for the good of humanity! :D lol

that sounds quite intersting actually. The Do's and Don'ts about Graphic Design.
Off the top of my head could tell them how sh it that bloody lens flare filter looks. I've seen a few bad examples this week already.
But I have no idea what Ich bin das unteraffe means. I am the under monkey?? Sounds lost in translation somehow. And two stones please!! Beauty.
That made me laugh.

Actually, there have to be a few threads around here that discuss design cliches. Here's one: http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15958

bit confusing there with the stone thrown in there. Never heard of that Beer. Great thing about Germany is that they are king of Beers and most towns have their own beers. Ive still got many to try.

photoshop is a raster based program. Logos should ALWAYS be designed in a vector based program like Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw for scalability.
Raster effects can be added later, if desired.

That's interesting that u say that. Normally I would just make a logo very big and any rescaling would be ok (cos it would be rescaled smaller). I see what u mean though. Im starting to learn illy now.

I know "rastlose liebe" is German for restless love. I only know that because it's the title to a Schubert piece that I sang in college. Singing in German can be a bitch.
I would start my speech with "Ich bin ein Berliner".
It will give you instant recognition and welcoming warmth. It worked for Kennedy!

So you work at all your logos at billboard size huh? ;)
I start all my logo artwork by thrashing it into into a 40 acre wheat field. That way, whenever I need a bigger version of it, I merely take an aerial shot from the right distance, and I have the size I need.

all the words are from my own head, no internet needed. :)
my girlfriend did german at school and my best mate's partner is half german so i pick up a few words here and there (mostly to do with drinking.. mostly). but i like languages in general anyway. I feel ashamed as an englishman, that i can only fluently speak english whereas the rest of europe seem to be almost fluent in at least three different languages!

Let it officially be known that I nominated this for Quote of the Week. :D

When I give talks on design to people that are not designers, I like to talk about the importance of design that goes beyond just ads and retail, but where design can help people with directions, erganomics, awareness of a cause, etc., or that doesn't float yer' boat, try talking about where design has come from and where it may be heading... good luck!
