JoeWatson I love your website. When I was 17 I used to bomb my town with graffity. I was getting pretty good but the boys in blue put a stop to my adventure. I like finalized art but I love sketches. I beleive you just finished inpiring me to take up hand drawing again. Thanks!

Thank you. Believe it or not, my background was graffitti. (LA based). I got into the commercial aspect of art and design when I visited "Mr. Cartoon's" studio in Gardena, CA. I was 17 or 18 when this happened. He convinced me that you can make top dollar off of art if you applied it in the right way. This is when I enrolled in trade school and studied "Sign Graphics" and learned how to traditionally letter and paint signage. I got tired of that after awhile and studied commercial art (logo design, layout, etc.). This is when I was able to combine my classical sign painting skills with modern digital techniques. I will have a complete demonstration on how I execute my technique on my website soon. Look out for it!!!

Let us know when you do this. It sounds very interesting. The Journey inside the mind of an artist, might see like a good name.

i really can't wait! you've definitely got that graffitti-esque style to your work. I think graffitti is completely underrated...it's PURE talent, not tainted by predetermined notions of "formal art". i really wish every big city would put up a huge blank wall and let the artists go crazy...they could photograph the wall at the end of each month and then paint it white to start over.

I would be first in line for this event. This is the whole reason for my career. After I found out that you can draw on a computer I went faithfully to school. But without a doubt Graffitti was my true inspiration.
As a matter of fact I'm going to draw some sketches and post them in the showcase section. It's on son!

True, graffitti is so underrated. It's funny though because many graff artists went on to become successful commercial artists. Just take a stroll through a supermarket and focus on the titles and logos on most candybars, cereals, etc. You will see a definate "graff" influence. On the logo above..."Major League Sluggers" you can see the graff elements in the treatment of the title. Notice the outline and "spraylike" flaires of the letterforms. That my friend.,, is no accident! Take a look at my website: www.hyena-empire.com ("") and explore the character section. Take a look at a character's arm for example, the silouette of the arm is like a swift spray stroke prensented in a proper way. I love to flare allot of my characters shapes. It just seems to give them that energetic edge that people just can't get enough of. I always wanted to do a candy bar logo such as the new Mars Bar or perhaps Snickers logo. I really feel that I can contribute to that industry. It's just a matter of finding out who and where to go to so I can get the job. Any leads will be greatly appreciated.

I see the influence here for shore. This is kind of like a block style, with some old school.
Do you do you logos by hand and then edit them in Illustrator or is this all done on the computer?

I tightly sketched it by hand and just traced what I did in Illustrator. Next, I take it into photoshop for effects etc. This is how I genarally work because I can nail the exact feel of the logo with the custom lettering that I create. If there is a subtitle that needs to be in a title, then sometimes I'll use an existing font. I just think that the hand lettering looks better for the type of projects that I do.

Thats what I assumed you did. I think I just learned something valuable from you. I'm going to look into using my background to make better artwork.
I used to have pretty good controll of my lettering. Heck when I stop drawing I was just getting into using textures such as wood and 3D blocks to create my lettering.
Well JoeWatson thanks.
