r's.
we are no longer allowed to listen to our headphones at work. We all have an afternoon or a morning a week to choose what we want to listen to on the 'communal stereo'... and a condition is 'no niche music'... which means basically that I'll have to listen to everyone else's mainstream cr@p all week and won't get to listen to my ska/europop/happyhardcore mix that keeps me chugging on through the day. :( This is gonna suck so much.

The_Black_Knight

Wow. That does suck. I hate listening to other people's music.

Were headphones that big of a problem at your job? I figure as long as I can hear the phone and I'm available when someone needs me, what's the big deal?

Some people are just way too into control and micromanagement.

Somehow, when I first started using the internet and thought about how I would use it in the future, I didn't ever see that happening.

Are they just noticing that trick now? I used to do that all the time back in high school with my Walkman ;)

Bullcrap on the headphones. If listening for others or the phone or whatnot is required, then there's an easy way to solve that, just wear one earbud. Back at the printshop, my boss got bitchy for this reason and told me no more headphones. I went against him anyway and started wearing it in just one ear and when he saw that it wasn't diverting my attention from being called or whatnot, he just let it drop.

If that's not acceptable, then lower your productivity, best way of protest. I can't work out at the gym without music, and some people are that way with their work (music keeps them awake) ;)

And by the way, best title for a thread eva-h.

LMAO! QOTW!!!!! :D

People listening to headphones has, on a couple of occasions, led people to miss phone calls, or has meant they're a little more difficult to get the attention of. The boss thinks that people aren't talking to each other enough and that working with earphones in ears looks a little anti social too ... which i understand... but I'm confused here, would they prefer us to be focussed and working hard, or sitting chelping at each other?

My mac is being moved too, to make space for a new designer, and I'll be sat RIGHT infront of the speaker... so single earbud may not be an option.

Let's just see how mt productivity drops because i'm getting distracted by being forced to listen to some overplayed radio detritus. grrrr

Oh man, that does suck.

At my internship, they had a boombox that only had two stations come in, and both didn't bode well for my patience (adult contemporary and country). Whenever I have to hear music I don't like, I have a helluva time concentrating. I swear every time that 'Hey there Delilah' song came on, I cut myself with an x-acto; and no, surprisingly not intentionally, given the song.

And no 'niche' music? Isn't almost all styles of music 'niche' in some way?

Jackimalyn

They tried to do that, here too. They said people were "abusing" it. wtf does that mean? Plus the decision was made by HR, who have their own office on their own floor! I work in an "open office". One big room with sales, customer service, sales engineers, scheduling, the prez and VP who exchange drinking stories every day and me <marketing/GD>. THATS what i listen to. I told HR, unless they let me move my desk down to THEIR office, that I would continue to listen to headphones. I only weat one bud so I can hear if people need me or if a telemarketer calls. What BS. How is that good for morale? I need my music to tune out everything thats going on. I need the "white noise" of my music. w/e.

What's next? Are they gunna ban us from cruising the GDF all day?? damn corporations.

^^I'm getting sick of that song too. And that awful "Icky Thump" song by the White Stripes. That's the most cacophonous piece of sh!t I've ever heard in my life. I hear it at least every 3 hours, sometimes 3 times within one workday. I actually get excited when I hear a different White Stripes song like "Seven Nation Army" because it means I get a reprieve for that time slot when I would have normally heard that Icky crap.

Theres some AKon song or something that ALWAYS plays on the station a coworker streams that is stuck in my head every damn day... something like "you're too beautiful girl... thats why it'll never work... you had me suicidal... suicidal... suicidal" I mean jeeze! what is this crap????

I liked that Delilah song. It's pretty, I've just heard it way too much. It's a shame. Same thing happened two years ago with that Photograph song by Nickelback. I liked it at first, then after a few weeks of heavy rotation I started to get sick of it. And then the dj came on after playing it and he goes "That's Photograph by Nickelback, the first single off their new album which will be released in about 2 weeks!" Great. I'm sick of a single off an album that's not even out yet. Woot.

I'm allowed to listen to my iPod at work, but it seems to be the fastest way to make people decide they need to talk to me. And people talking to me usually means more work. I don't need more work.

Well, except now. It's not that I don't have any work, it's just that I'm a bit bored with all the things I'm supposed to be doing at the moment. I wonder if I put my iPod on, someone will come to me with something interesting and urgent...

Sounds like someone is on a power trip to me. No one wears headphones at my work (one guy used to but he's gone now - he was into hardcore) but there wouldn't be a problem if they did.

Is anyone else against it at your work. Can you sign a petition?

I'd vote for silence.

You can make a list of music you do not want to hear...

Then bring in a:
http://www.obenaufauctions.com/April14,2007-Yoho16LbSledgeHammerFiberglassHandleL.jpg

Then request that anything on that list, is subject to the "communal radio" being subject to practice swings. ;)

You think its bad now? Wait till Christmas. Same 20-30 songs... over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over again. From oh, after thanksgiving (which is after the 22nd of Nov.) I have very little (microscopic) tollerance for christmas music.

I used to work at an airport (TSA security), the airport management played the same 20-30 songs till April. It will get so bad that you want to use that peace maker (above) on yourself or others, just to ease the pain.

If they're playing songs on a radio, hook yourself up with a radio transmitter (for example to an iPod), and tune that in to match the current frequency. Find some loud music and crank up the volume. Hide your iPod and act like you don't know where it's coming from.

Think that will get the radio removed pretty fast.

I did this to the bosses wife who does the bookkeeping. She would be jammin to the oldies station and all of a sudden I would cut in with my ipod transmitter and play something like Sevendust. After a while she would get really frustrated and change the channel .... which I would match and play some Too $hort. I continued this all day long.

I found it hilarious ... she didn't.

No music at work...man that's rough. I listen to whatever I want, but I can always just close the door if it gets loud (fek the ipod, I blast it through my harmon/kardon speakers).. I listen to alot of jazz while at work (or when at home cooking for that matter). Then there is the Friday exception where I listen to radio (but toronto has some pretty cool stations).

did they ever say WHY no more headphones?

I couldn't stand my art studio classes because of the crap the instructor would insist on playing. If it wasn't noise, it was some elevator mood noise that put my teeth on edge.

However, it could be worse. I worked in a sign shop where the (born again Christian) owner thought it was his duty to minister to his employees so he kept the radio tuned to the Christian Network talk radio. If we complained, he turned it up louder so that we would GET THE MESSAGE MORE CLEARLY. I got the message. I quit.

Then you've got a different iTrip model. There are several FM transmitters out there, some only to iPod/mp3 players and others who will fit anything with a 3.5mm jack.
