This is a thought on my logo. See what you guys think, and any suggestions or feedback at all is appreciated! Thanks!

P.S.
Rio means river in Spanish, so I kinda did a river looking "i". yes?

how does this look at very small sizes? Is it still legible if you had it small enough to be printed on a pen?

Size issues not withstanding, I like it. :)

Yup. Sure is! Not that I'd be doing pens or anything... this is my personal logo for my home business. I might tho! You never know!

Thanks for the feedback!

I decided to keep it simple in just two colors, too, with no traps or anything. For web or whatever, I can do some cool stuff with bevels and drop shadows, etc.

everybody loves pens! ;)

I think it looks good in two color. I also like the squareness of it.

Looks good. The only thing that bugs me is the tilted "O". IMO, there's really no need for it as it's kind of disctracting.

Ya. I was kinda thinking about the tilted O as well. I thought maybe it would add a little something different to it, but yes, it can be distracting... thanks!

What do you think of the colors? Any suggestions on that?

I can dig it...I think the colors compliment each other well and are different than the typical stuffy logo's I've seen. The tilted O not withstanding I like it...but I don't know if I would like it less or more with the O not tilted.

green and blue are safe choices, i'd say you strayed just a little outside the safe zone, which is good...

Cool! Here it is with the O UNtilted! See what you think.

I dig it. works in black and white, good use of color. Unique use of the "i" to make it your own.

Nice, I like it. Looks a lot better w/o the tilted "O".

I prefer the untilted "o" as well.

I did like that the tilted version made the "o" look smaller than the "R" though... since the "i" is lowercase. ;)

I must be odd. I liked the tilted O. Thought it looked fun. No biggie though. Looking good.

Must be a New Zealand thing. Something in the beer we drink perhaps?

There was something on the news last night about how in NZ we drink so much that even Australians say we drink too much. So, I guess with all that booze in our systems, we're just used to everything looking a bit skew-whiff :D

Is that why my original was tilted??? Must be a margarita thing as well! I sure do like those... I'm still not sure whether it's to tilt or not to tilt... I kinda liked the tilt myself. Maybe I can mess around with the tilt a bit more and see how that goes! I truly appreciate everyone's input! I'll set up a card next, and you guys can take a looksee at that too!

This may just be my personal taste, but I think the RIO part is a little too tall.

Of course, that can also lead to problems beyond just taste, if your logo is overly tall or long, as it makes it difficult to fit it neatly into many standard layouts, particularily if your logo is placed alongside many other logos, like if you're something, or being listed. You have a lot more leeway with width, as many logos are wider than they are tall. Taller logos should be more squarish in aspect, while wider than tall logos should be a maximum of about a 2:3 ratio.

While I don't think in inward tilting O is terrible, I find the outward tilting one to be annoying.

Edit: both are now annoying me. :o

Yeah, I don't like the outward tilting either. The inward one is fine, but I like the middle one better.

Brewer - quick! Look away! Do NOT allow them to annoy you!!! Have a beer like a NZealander! ;)

I don't like the squiggly line at the bottom. Overall I think it's ok, if not a little old fashioned.

I'm not trying to be mean but I can't understand why everyone is being so nice. I prefer your avatar to your logo.

martyng - I was actually considering using the avatar as my logo, but was afraid that some corporate people may frown upon it.

I'm not sure it's so much that everyone is being "nice". Perhaps they just truly LIKE it! Believe me, I've seen some logos go through the wringer here. If there's criticism to be made, they all speak their minds! I have no problems with that at all, and it's another reason I posted it HERE. I knew I'd get honest opinions.

Old fashioned? Hmmmmm... I'm not sure what you mean - could you expound on that a bit more? I guess what I'm saying is would you be so kind as to suggest what you'd change and in what way? I'm all ears! (er, eyes) I was trying to stick with just two colors for simplicity, which is always good for a logo. It's easily converted to black and white, and can be read at a very small size, which are all good qualities for a successful logo. The squiggly line at the bottom kinda ties in with the squiggly for the "i" in Rio. I'll try getting rid of it and see how that looks.

Please provide more details on what you'd change! Thanks!

no kidding, lol. ;)

The original is growing on me.

I don't like the last option because the "o" pointing outward leads my eye *away* from the logo, instead of back into it. I also think that it adds a feeling of tension to the mark instead of the solid stability that the original projects.

Yep- stick with the original! Now you must get us all margaritas for our valuable insight (snicker, hick up...)

It is simple and there isn't anything really wrong with it. Imo blue and green aren't particularly eye pleasing. What I meant by old fashioned (in my eyes) is that it looks like it could be on a juice can from the eighties or something. I'm not going to suggest changes as I quite like the font etc, I just think it works a lot better in your avatar.

Personally http://martyng.com/rio.jpg > the above

Well now, martyng has me thinking about the avatar option. Here's another I was playing with but just wasn't sure how well it would go over.

morea
09-12-2007, 06:41 PM
I'd personally shy away from that. I think that martyng was referring to the type treatment in the avie... not the image.

You run into all kinds of resolution issues if you use a raster image in your logo. Maybe you won't ever reproduce it at large sizes... but you might want to some day, and using a raster graphic is going to limit the logo's functionality.

Vectorized
09-12-2007, 06:48 PM
That's exactly what I was thinking... which is why I designed a vector logo. The word "graphics" in my original logo is the same font. I also did not want to use gradients for the base. I can always do that on the web or whatever, but not for print. Best to have solid color for the foundation. Maybe I could use the same font for the R and the O... hmmmm.

Crimson - too bad we can't have cyber margaritas!!!

just bear in mind that it's got to be something that YOU are happy with.

By asking other designers for critique you can definitely gain some valuable insights and some great advice, but you can also run yourself in circles and give yourself a migraine.

Since tastes vary from person to person, chances are that you won't come up with one design that everybody loves. There will always be some people that it doesn't appeal to, but that doesn't make it a 'bad' design. ;)

and p.s. - if you guys figure out the cyber margarita thing, count me in!

Running in circles is what I do best! LOL! No migraines there! I agree with you, though. I think I'm going to stick with the original for now, anyway.I don't want to end up changing it too much or often though. I'd rather have an identity I'm happy with and I can stick to. The more people that see it, the more it'll stick in their minds!

With the body of the i being a river it feels as though the dot of the i is the sun setting down the valley made by the R and O. Have you explored more hills/sunset colours for the mark?

Vectorized
09-13-2007, 02:07 AM
That's what I was thinking too (about the dot looking like a sun). Hmmmm. I dunno... like maybe purple and orange instead of the green? I didn't want red, really. Orange is ok though. I'll have to try that. Thanks!
