I need to vent.... SubDriversWife can account for what I'm about to share... I won't post any names or links publically because I don't need any negative karma, but if you must know who I'm speaking of PM me and I'll share...

First, a bit of background (will try to keep short)... I'm young, only 25, and 'back in the day' when all the kids in school had those fancy newfangled Nin-ten-doh's, I was playing Jumpman on a Commodore 64 and learning to type with Mavis Beacon (at all of 10 years old). By the time I hit my pre-teens, in about 91 and 92, the local dial-up BB's were my scene. Then we 'upgraded' to CompuServe in around 93 and at the age of 13-14 I was the Horse's Forum's SYSOP for the Kid's section. Proud me. Then the big per-minute charges started to happen and we switched to a local ISP in prolly 94 and I started playing on the 'Net as it was first born... Back in the beginning there was an awesome chatroom website (some of you may remember) called WBS.net, and one of the rooms was the Cowboy Chat room. Naturally, I spent alot of time there. Met a couple of my best friends online there (SDW being one of them!! /emoticons/smilewinkgrin.gif ) ... well I played with HTML and started teaching myself webdesign, back then the flashing links and animated email graphics were THE hottest thing /emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif LOL! At anyrate, as I went thru HS I chatted an aweful lot in the Cowboy room and talked to one lady in particular a few times. From what I can remember, she never seemed interested in webdesign, as part of the WBS.net website, with your username, you also got webspace to put up photos and whatnot, I don't recall her ever using hers much (but then again it's been a while)......

Well, fast forward... I graduated HS, went out to Wyoming to work with horses (my true calling) but when I came home to Ohio I ended up pregnant and found myself having a family and needing a better income than training horses allowed for... so I decided to do what my next best bet was -- website design. I looked around and finally decided on an assoc's program at a local college for Graphic Design, and completed my degree about a year and a half ago. Granted, I have not had much 'design experience' but I am way more qualified than said Lady. Well, to my point, within the last few years, I've sort of reconnected with some of my old WBS.net friends, stayed close with just a couple, and started my own freelance business. I specialize in the Equine/Horse industry because that is what my background is. And then along comes this Chick again... just literally EATING up the Equine Design businesses left and right. She's one of those that charges like $50 for a whole damn website, the graphics are horiffic, and she has even actually Lifted a few websites from some betterknown designers or horse farms... I just want to SCREAM at her!!!! And what's worse is that she does offer a good deal of support (and who can freaking beat $50 for a whole dang website --- INCLUDING all maintenance for life!!!) so almost all the potential clients that I try to solicit say 'when I decide to have a website built, it will be with [so and so]' and I just shudder in my seat. Then, about 6 months ago, I switched my server that hosts my websites, got a reseller account (not so much to resell webspace but to be able to offer hosting for my clients), and LO AND BEHOLD here she comes waltzing into my chosen company (out of the bazillion other webhosts out there) and litterally takes over the webhost support forum... she's now pretty much known there as the resident Horse person...

I know, I'm whining and bitching about her, buck up, chill out, yeah I get it. I half expect her to start posting here, but then I remember that there are REAL designers posting here so she'd never think about coming here.... It just totally JERKS me that she rips off other designs and then has the NERVE to claim to be 'real'... She changes her website on about a weekly basis... from hideous to hideous... it never gets better, it just changes... Here's a quote from her most recent design .................... ''I am very proud of [company] Web Design. I feel that my creativity and love for design shows in each site I have designed. Many people try to duplicate my work but you can always tell a [company] site.. my heart shines for each of my clients.'... [her] /emoticons/ph34r.gif /emoticons/violent.gif Ohgawd how that jerks me...

So then in another forum I post on (horse related) someone asked about starting an online business, and the next person to reply started ripping on Web Designers in general because of the one she had ripped her off.... so then I posted something trying to say 'it's not all designers', etc... and then someone else posts about how THEIR designer ripped them off... turns out all these 'designers' are really some ISP company that 'does' webpages (which erks me, but that's a whole other post.... /emoticons/frusty.gif ) ... and then SDW posts on there defending me and suggesting a few REAL designers (ourselves included, and some other greats in the Equine industry) and someone posts after her, 'Well when I have my website done, I'm gonna go with [Company] Web Design, beccause she just ROCKS' ...... Aaaahhhh!!!! Where's the smiley for pulling hair outta my head???

Funny how she says, 'others try to imitate us', as a way to make it think the people she is stealing from are copying her.
Can you say horsethief?

Is she stealing your stuff?
Maybe Ryan can give you a way to tag your code (is that even possible?) to it can be identified as yours. When she steals it, sue her butt for copyright infringement.

But I guess people 'borrow' code all the time.

Do up a couple of portfolio sites and whup her ass at design. Then advertise the hell out of em.

I don't know how you'll whup her prices tho. She independently wealthy?

Or give The GDF Enforcers some more details. (LOL.) I don't know who they are but they run around here in spandex tights with the underwear on the outside. Some even have capes...

Oh Rams...how I feel your pain! If I could spit nails in her direction I would. It is so terribly frustrating for people to think thats the best they can get. And yes, her designs aren't attractive but what irks me even more is the fact that the few that do look presentable, are just kipes of very prominent, talented designers that put in time, effort and creativity to please their clients, only to have it cheapened by 'said' designer who, in no shame at all, just simply viewed the source and changed the pics. Makes my stomach turn but then again I've been on the stolen end of a copyright infringement situation before that left me sour and anal about that. I even called her out on a copyright infringement. There's a prominent equine free and paid clip art site and she stole one of their custom photos, stamped out the watermark and called it her own. I emailed the original creator and low and behold, 2 weeks later it was gone. And previous to that, she took work that a mutual friend of Rams and myself did to HELP her out and called it her own giving no credit to the actual designer. No scruples. I could give her clients 200% better service and originality, Rams could give her clients 200% better eye appeal and navigational ease. But the life and work of the dishonest, uncreative horse gal goes on, and continues to grow my ulcer.

but if these clients consistantly choose crap designs, imagine what you'd have to churn out to make them happy. maybe you branch out a little more for awhile, then pick up the pieces when they all get sick of her.

if they want cheap crap and you don't do that, what more can you do? win them over or move on.

While we're on the subject of horses (well I am), there's a question I've also wanted to know, can horses understand English (like telling a dog to sit etc.)?
Because why else do cowboys go 'giddy up' and 'woah there?'

subdriverswife
09-08-2004, 05:21 PM
Reed-They sure can. Well...in sorts. Not so much 'english' but just like a dog...they begin associating a certain word/command with a certain action. It takes 'teaching' them to associate a 'ssshh ssshh sshhh' w/ backing or a 'cluck' with increasing speed but once they do, often horses will end up relying more on the voice than the cues. There have been many showring horses that even begin to anticipate their calls!

Being the owner of two full bred Arabs and having trained police dogs I can state that yes both listen and learn from their owners about what to do and not do. As for understanding? That depends on the animal. I once had a dog that I swear could read my thoughts. He responded almost as fast as I could give the commands, like he knew what was needed to be done. Once you reach that point its very hard to give up the dog though....ugh.

So can you give us a site that she's done? Perhaps shes leaving clues behind on where she's getting her designs. Have you thought about just showing the quality of your site compared to hers to potential clients?

Screw karma, let's go on a killing spree!

If we can get about 38 people together, we'll split us up into an assault group, and a support group, plus 4 two man groups for security. Each assaulter will be armed with full auto assault rifles, probably the AR-15 with the M203 40 mm grenade launcher on the bottom, with collapsable stock for CQB.

12 of the support group will carry the FN Minimi, or SAW light machine gun. It fires about 900 rounds per minute and is fires the same calibre of round as the M-16/AR-15 (5.56mm). The other three will carry the general purpose C-6 machine gun, firing the 7.62 X 54mm round. Each support soldier will also carry one M-72 Short Range Anti-Armour Weapon in case of armour.

Support will set up on target, no more than 50-100 meteres distance, and at a given time, will open fire continuosly for 1 minute. At that point, set up in a perpendicular line, the assault group will move through and destroy any remaining enemy, take prisoners and gather inteligence.

Once the operation is completeted, the security groups will secure an RV (rendez vous) point, and both the assault and support groups will move to it, form an all around defense and await extraction via helicopter.

You know, I'd love to grab a few boxes of ammo and one of those Minimi's and shoot the crap out of my office, my computer and the digital printers found therein. Then, I'd walk over to my boss, and take the biggest $hit on his desk the world has ever seen.

Then i'd leave.

I really would try to not let it get to you - this happens all the time. Just keep on making successful good looking useable websites. and you can do no wrong.

Your opposition will continue to make ropey cheap ones that she cannot afford to up-keep, her clients will get frustrated & begin to look elsewhere. And if you have successsfully optimsed yours - it's you who benefit in the long term.

Also you may want to advise the sites she has copied that someone is violating their copyright and get then to write a cease and desist. This formal notification can scare the bejesus out of amateurs in it for the short term, and cause them to rethink their strategy.

Ok...I'll be honest. I have skimmed this thread here and there...and have not read EVERY part of it but...
Cowgirl - after looking at the .com listed above...it is EASY to see why she charges only $50 per site. It's a lil equation we use on this board that we like to call 'Crap in - Crap Out' LOL!! I think but am not totally sure - that Magnus came up with that for us.

Though I have not seen much of your work, I did view one site you are working on that you posted for a crit and help on and your work is much...MUCH more well designed. Hers is not 'designed' at all really. Centered text through the entire site....c'mon!! '...many ppl duplicate my work...' Ummm ok..I HIGHLY doubt this! Any TRUE designer wouldn't touch that 'design style' with a -----------------------------------> 10ft pole as D-Frag would say! Truth being...you really pay for what you get with this company. $50 gets you....um...$50 worth and NOTHING more but possibly less..LOL! They are using COMINC SANS people! WTF??? On one site you can scroll text and the background doesn't move but the text scrolls right over the horse and you can't read it for sh!t!

Do you do any marketing for your business. I think that could help a great deal. You need to let potential clients know that what you pay for is what you get. If they want good, quality work, they will pay more than the $50. I can totally understand your aggrevation. We all, to a certain extent, have to deal with these 'wannabee designers' on a daily basis whether it be in print or web design and it gets old..and very tired!! If you can do some marketing and show these potential clients the quality they will get from you it may help you and you can breeze past that company and the money you can make with one website would take them 10 sites to make :o)

Good luck :o)

Whew, Dzine, Thanks for the boost....

Actually, guys, from an email I got this morning, (I'll explain in a sec) I was JUST about to come here and post her website, but thanks to SDW I don't have to now! LOL.

Here's what I meant from above... I had received an email from someone about a week ago about contracting for a website, I replied to her giving her my 'shpiel' and told her I was looking forward to doing business w/ her, could help her, etc. Side note: She is a SPEED HORSE person (which is exactly what I am) [speedhorse = quarter horse racing (1/4 mile track vs. like Thoroughbred racing), barrel racing horses (rodeo), contesting events (which are timed events where the rider and horse have to complete some kind of pattern or something, such as running into the arena, turning around in a small box at the far end, and running back (called Keyhole), etc....] .... Ok, I also designed and maintain Runninghorses.net (a SPEEDHORSE website!!!!) .... So I didn't hear from her and I emailed her back, doing a follow up, asking if she had any questions, etc.... here's the response I get:

from email said...
My appologies for not getting back to you sooner.
We've decided to contract another web site designer to do our site...turns out that they are involved w/running quarter horses on a more personal basis.
However,if things don't work out we'll keep your company in mind.
Thanks for your consideration.

And for *SOME* reason, I have a high incling that it was Ms. Whoa Horse that they've contracted with. I ran this by another designer friend of mine, and he said (w/out knowing the whole story, just basically that I lost a potential client to another webdesigner) 'it sounds like someone has made some derrogotory (sp?) comments about you!!!' ... then I told him about Whoa Horse.....

Soooo that's where I'm at now.... I'll keep you guys updated on what I find out about this lost potential client.....

I would ask a friend to talk to miss Whoahorse about designing a website and see if she will slander you in front of them. If so I would talk to a lawyer about this. Slander is a civil suite kinda thing. You have to prove that you lost clients because of it but if you do you can shut her down.

If you're losing clients because she's better than you thats one thing, but if your losing clients because she is talking trash about you then thats another. Can anyone say defamation of character?

LMAO!

It's actually a phrase I say quite often.... Like as in such a case as when I forget to put the parking break on the truck and it starts to roll down hill and potentially crash into the shopping-cart-corral at the grocery store... 'WHOA HORSE!!!!!!!!!' In other words, when I see a potential train-wreck coming..... How fitting....

hehe.

Rams-I hope this boosts your morale a bit. I know you hear me say how much I love your designs and how much I've seen you grow as a designer but it helps coming from true professionals with an objective opinion and critique. Do some more marketing and keep up the good work! Remember the paint cans idea?

Wow, that is one of the most amature sites I've seen in a while. It has all the elements of a typical shit amature site: crappy generic background, cheesy image text titles, big ass picture at the top, text placed all over in tables, at least one animated gif, and a counter. It doesn't get much worse. And don't even get me stated on the code. I'm almost afraid to view the other sites she's made.

And lo and behold, the first site I click on of her's has a horse picture that looks like it was scanned from a magazine at the wrong res and it uses that overused water reflection java applet. This is truly a gem of distasteful design.

After getting past the splash page I'm greeted by a stupid marquee, very unseemless tiled background, and random border, plus a few more badly optimized pictures. I can't go on.

LMAO @ Ryan!

Seriously this is bad, um let me rephrase that. THIS IS HORRIBLE!

Don’t worry about the whore design company of hers. Quality is better then quantiy, you kind of realize that when your on a plain in the middle of a storm and this it hits you “Thank GOD Boing made this thing and not Dell computers”
