Everyone needs design, from the hobbiest to the corporate market. If you can sell yourself and your skills to whomever you come in contact with then you'll have a steady stream of income, some larger, some small.

It's not a matter of "who does more" it's a matter of what you can do to fit whatever they may need.

And what works in my particular market base may not work in yours.

Market yourself to whoever you can. As you gain clients in particular fields, you can market yourself more and more in those fields and can eventually say that you specialize in graphic design for such and such industries.

Thanks Drazan. I think some businesses do more business during certain seasons, which could mean they spend more money advertising at that time.

Why stop at "T".
Surely the Yellow Page directory goes all the way to "Z"?

Chase the accountants. No matter what, people need their taxes done.
Doctors are hard to break into, but if you get in, and word gets out, it'll be lucrative too.
Cars used to be great...
mortgage companies used to be great
an investment firm might work out, tell people where to put their money now

There's good suggestions mentioned already. Here's two, which I think there are already mentioned but in my own words:

1. Concentrate on a NICHE

2. Look at the NEEDs.

That way, you're not looking just for jobs but you know your chosen NICHE market and you realised there is NEED for your service or they got a NEED. You concentrate all your effect on that NICHE and supplying to their needs.

Concentrate on that NICHE, get a strategy planned, and then this "NICHE" will get to know you and your quality - and spread the word of your business and amazing services like fire.

Big companies concentrated on a NICHE and then got big because they became successful at it, to such, they grew to even sell their company, or partnered with major companies.

When you conconcentrate on a Niche, it gets you to focus more, narrow it down to such and that's when it gets really exciting.

Thanks onedarkangel, what niche are you working on?

Sorry, I didn't read your question right, so I cut a LOT of text out lol.

Mentorship and organisations and narrowed it down to Black communities.

This is a newspaper but designed in a magazine format. What happened is, I saw there was no magazine for black communities. I went further, and visited colleges too and asked students and they said, they haven't got no newspaper in college either.

So I had an idea. I got the number of the director of this college and said, "hi, I am lanching magazine that will celebrate the success of students and news on what colleges are doing for the black communities. I wondered if you would like to sponsour a page and talk about what your college does."

He asked to meet so I met and already had a draft layout with...photos of students within that same college and quotes. That was it!

He saw the vision by just that one middle page layout. He was willing to give me 700 pounds for middle spread, and was willing to be in each issue.

Now, guess what I did next? Yep, I went to every college in that city. How did I get them all?

I said, "Hi, I am lauching a magazine..blah, blah, blah..AND...the DIRECTOR OF THE THAT COLLEGE, is also sponsouring a page, and.."

She, straight away said, "we'll sponsour a page." The competition instinct kicked in.

The newspaper is now distributed in Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley. And I the name was used, a name that all youths would use and it caught on. WHA'AGWAN! Meaning, What's happening. Or what's going down. Started it in Feb 2005 and its still going strong.

Here's the newspaper cover that became a magazine format...

Two years later, I saw there was no magazine on Mentorship. There was a lot going around in where people wanted business advise and so forth but, I found a niche. Again, it was in the youth kind of sector.

So, I started collecting stories on different organisations doing projects with youths but none of them did anything on Mentorship and the change regarding Self Development, techniques on figuring out what you want in life, how to plan, how to goal set, how to write a CV, how to pass an interview, how to be a leader, how to communicate with different people. Lots of elements within Mentorship.

Since I got experience from doing the above newspaper/magazine, I used the same technique and now, I got me a new magazine launch, which is in september. This magazine will start small and as emailing PDF style. Designed in Indesign and saved as Acrobat.

Through the years, I have collected so many emails off students, youths and teachers. So I am doing it this way and then give it 6 months, they all got use to the magazine and then, I launch it in paper print.

This one is ready, so if you want a copy emailed to you, no probs. Might get you thinking about your own ideas.

Here's cover for the first one:

There are four kinds of business. Tourism. Food service. Railroads. And sales. And hospitals/manufacturing. And air travel.

Mynock (http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/forum/member.php?u=6257),

Maynock, though I understand what you mean - after years in business, I have come to the conclusion, that there is only one kind of business.

PEOPLE.

When someone got the skill in that area - it doesn't matter what business they are in. They'll succeed. When we narrow it down to PEOPLE, we narrow it down to NEEDS. And when narrow it down to NEEDS, we begun to understand one LAW that many miss.

The LAW of Supply and Demand. Find the People, a group, a Niche, who got a Need, and SUPPLY to that DEMAND.

The problem I have found is when people set up in business, they do so with being personel. They think of what they think people need and not what 'this type of person or group of people need.'

That was one of my biggest challenges when I started business. I had to take myself out of the picture and look at the needs of the people. We don't built business maynock. We don't build organisations. We don't build family, society, or nations.

We build People and people build the business. When someone finds the need of the people, that niche, he or she won't need to sell their product. It will sell like crazy because there is a need and they planned a strategy to get the niche they are aiming at KNOW or be AWARE the product is available and can supply to their need.
