I was requested on another car forum to do a tire/wheel tutorial and I thought I'd share it here as well. I know most of you may find this elementary, but there may be a few peeps who might benefit and if I can help 'em out, then it's all good.

So...I've done a quick lil 'tutorial' on how I illustrate my tires/wheels in Adobe Illustrator 10. This particular wheel/tire doesn't have quite as much detail in it, but it'll give you the general idea. My process is actually very simple.

So follow along step by step and keep in mind that you can adjust the diameters to achieve whatever sizes and styles you want. Also, follow photos to replicate styles more accurately. With simple searches on google you can find straight-on views of many styles of wheels or simply create your own.

Here are also a few samples of other tires/wheels that can be
achieved using these basic principles...

Dragster tires, low-profile sport wheels, etc...

And the tutorial...

Hope some of you find it helpful. As I said, my process is really very simple...just some basic shapes and fills.

Good luck and have fun!

Tony

Nice! I am not as proficient in Illustrator as I would like to be, so I appreciate stuff like this. Thanks for posting!

Hmmm...looks like I better get busy and do another tutorial. As soon as I get out from under a couple things I'll do up another tut for you guys and gals.

Glad you like this one! I hope it helps a few of the 'newbies' out. I love Illustrator.

I have both hands raised......

great, cause now I can apply this to something I've been working on for work.

Much appreciated for sure.

ps I love that pen and I'm just learning the program. Are you drawing with a tablet for these? I only have the mouse right now. Can't decide on which drawling tablet to get???? Any suggestions?

Tablet shmablet...I use the mouse for everything I do. Tablets are for pansies. ;)

Kiddin'...but yes, seriously...I only use the keyboard and mouse for everything I do. No fancy crap for me...I like it plain and simple. I can draw faster and more accurately with a mouse.

Glad you can utilize the tutorial!!

meadow - i have a wacom intuos but when i'm using illustrator, i find it much easier and more precise to use the old mousey.
I'll use the tutorial often... all i need to do now is nail the paint finishes/reflections (ie. the hard bit) and I'll be happy.

how about just a quick brief over view of creating an image? Then your next tutorial can go into more detail (headlights, windows, chrome, glares) etc...

Well cool beans for the mouse.... Cause I sure can use it....LOL

Well off to play around with this. and thanks for the tablet feedback. Much appreciated. I'll just hold off spending that money and will instead purchase some new dog beds... At least they will have instant satisfaction.

I second this. I've always wanted to get better at this stuff, that'd be great. I've done the red pepper tutorial, but it'd be nice to have some other perspectives to play with. :)

Thanks for sharing buddy, definately always nice to see tips traded and tutorials from the top, so thanks and big upps to ya. I've been meaning to illustrate an ol rod for personal, may hit you up for some tips.

for a tutorial, you could do a "quick" how to, start with an image and show a couple screenshots after the linework, detail, then color....or something along those lines, be nice

Love your stuff T, keep it up

You should try recording a piece of work from start to finish and speed up the shit out of it.

I love watching speed tutorials.

YNOT, your tutorial sucks. I followed it to the letter, and this is what I got. ;(

I forgot the most important part. To get the results you see in my tutorial, you have to drink 2 to 3 Red Bull's before you start...otherwise, yes, I'm afraid that what you'll get is what you have there.

:p
