it looks misspelled al helvetioa
teaorcoffee?
09-19-2007, 03:08 PM
that because thats a 'o' not a 'c' but you can work that out surley, and what its trying to say.

That's very, very close to working, but took me a little too long to get it.

t' me, this reads "red elvio in half a helvetica".
Of course, if ye be lookin' at th' fine print, it done reads "five-o", but I think it be a bit o' a stretch t'expect folks t' see that right out.

obesebee.... did you smile once you had got it tho??

09-19-2007, 03:19 PM
im not asking for pople to see it right out, it wouldnt be intresting if they didnt have to work to figure it out, they simply wouldnt remember it. you loo at the poster, read it, look at it again and after a while you go 'oh yeah'

When is the actual birthday? I understand it was created 1957, but it didn't get named 'Helvetica' until 1960, right?
The poster 5-0 trick didn't hit me immediately either. It's a clever idea, I just don't know if you left enough for the viewer to chew on. What if you used an overlay approach?

I'm sorry, but I don't see how this communicates 50 years of helvetica...I think seeing the word "helvetica" written 50 times might say it better...but that might be too trite a solution.

I didn't smile, no, but I wanted to smile which is why I said it was close to working. If I was walking past this I wouldn't have stopped to take the time to get it. It needs to be almost immediate. The trick is giving the viewer just enough for them to feel clever in getting it (which gives the smile), if it takes too long it is just frustrating.
Broacher's idea of an overlay, or screen print effect could work I reckon.

the overlay looked horrible and didnt look nice. i thought this worked better.

ok well wats a screen print effect??
obesebee
09-19-2007, 03:40 PM
Like a two colour screen job, where the overlapped colours create different hues. Just a thought.
I wouldn't give up on pushing this concept though, but it does need to be more immediate.

I am afraid I'm still not getting it, maybe i'm just slow today...or most days but i'm not seeing it.

For a poster, it would be neat if you could take the two images (Helvetica, and Five O) and use a scaling optical illusion. Where the image changes depending on viewing distance. Here's a great example of one of those illusion mechanisms (but I have no idea how you would translate it into type!):

I agree. It's a great idea. You just need a little more 'clue' here so that people can appreciate it. Like what if the FIVE O was solid red, and HELVETICA a cast shadow on top? I don't know. But I agree you've got something here. Should be fun to work out!

could you give me an example of what it is please???

OHHHH
Five-O
yea, not gonna get that in any timely manner ever. Especially when five o means hawaii and police, not fifty.

Ohhhhhhh, now I get it. Man, I am slow.

maybe if i just enlarged the type at the top and bottom so when people read it they automatically have five-o in there head??? its just so it sticks out more, instead of skipping it to begin with

Yes and no. I understand that it's 50 years, but that's because I know the movie, know what it's about, and know the typeface. Five-O is a term for police, which isn't agreat association to make. One of the reasons Federal Express was renamed to FeDex when Landor n Associates revamped their identity is this: thorugh their market surveys, they found out that the word 'federal' was similar to 'federales' in mexico, which connotates negative feelings sometimes associated w/ authority. You have a similar issue here, or have the potential for that issue to appear. Find another soltuion. What i love is the minimalist approach, which in my opinion, really conveys what helvetica is about. Simple, straight, to the point.

better, but I'm not sure if it is just easier to see because I know to look for it. This DOES make it obvious to the casual viewer that the red text is intentional and has a specific meaning, whereas the old version looked more random (in my opinion).

you know what would be neat? One of those optical illusions that has two words in one... like this:

I love it. Swiss styling and colourway. Really subtle composition.
The only people that will give a toss about Helvetica's 50th birthday are graphic designers.
To me, the viewer should always have interaction with a piece.
With the colurway and use of Helvetica it screams 'Helvetica' without patronising the visually literate graphic designers.
