Ok.... has anyone ever been offered work from overseas? And if so, can anyone tell me how payment would be made?
Here's the deal.... or a little more info....
I really really want to move to Australia, but I fall short by 5 points for the Skilled Work Visa. My gf's sister & brother-in-law have bought a business and they were going to sponsor me BUT.. there are some visa requirements that make it impossible for them to sponsor me right now... SO... we thought of this...
They want me to design a periodical for them but because I can't move there to work... they'll "hire" me as if they did a web search for graphic designers... so I'm guessing this would be contracted work? And should I draw up some sort of contract for them? Or what sort of contract do you think will be needed? After the so-called contract "expires" (on either of our ends), we will attempt the sponsored work visa since more time will have elapsed... hope all this makes sense....
So basically my question is how would I get paid? Hourly or just for each completed periodical... and should we both draw up contracts?
Thanks....

since this is purely cosmetic why not try and find out which would look best on your future application for a visa

I dont' quite follow what you mean by "cosmetic".... they DO want me to work for them and create this publication [in australia] but since they're buying this existing business they cannot sponsor me right away... I'm really burnt out with visa's right now...
Visa's aside.... my question wasn't answered.... can someone answer it?

by cosmetic I meant that you can make it look however you want it to look - so make it look the best it can to help your application

immigration is tricky, and the rules are going to vary from country to country. I'm a US citizen in the process of immigrating to Canada. If a company wants to sponsor me for a work visa, they have to prove that they have advertised the job and that there is no one else in the area who could do the job.
As for the current situation, you should use your standard contract (you should always use a contract) and be sure to keep dated records, in case you need to produce them in the future for immigration. Be sure to document everything and keep it all above board (obviously).
There is some information about drafting a contract (if you don't already have one) located here (http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=26317).

Thanks Morea - yeah, I know that visa's are tricky... I've been checking out the different ones for the past 6 months. I'm going crazy!! And I know that they have to advertise the job first. Was hoping that if they hired me outside of being an actual employee, that maybe we could get away with it... dunno...
Ok.. thanks for that link.

you should be able to do the contract work without a problem, as far as I can tell. Don't worry TOO much - just be sure to dot and cross the proverbial "i's and t's". ;)

Will I get a better chance if I dot my "i's" with little hearts? :D

LOL! You should, due to the cuteness factor. ;)
oh, and you can accept payment through PayPal (www.paypal.com), less a small percentage to cover fees and international currency exchange.
Check with your bank - you may also be able to accept a check, as long as it specifies what currency ($X US, or $X Australian).

Yeah, I'm set up for a paypal business account. Wasn't sure about the foreign currency exchange factor but I guess paypal will handle that portion of it...
... or I can dot my i's with little kangaroos..... nah, might be overkill....

Depends on how small you can draw kangaroos. If you can get them under 1 mm high then that would be ok, but if your kangaroos are 1cm high then it would be overkill.

Donna,
My husband found this on Ars Technica, and asked me if I wanted to move there. Obviously I don't, so I thought of you. http://jobs.arstechnica.com/list/34/ Maybe they would be willing to help the right person with a work visa?
Tried to PM you, instead of reactivating this thread, but it wouldn't let me.

That's sweet ya thoughta me :D ... Sydney's a bit far from where I'm moving to tho... 4 hour flight. Think they'd have to pay me REALLY big bucks to fly back and forth everyday.. LOL!!!
