If InDesign CS is giving you that message you need to run the updater for CS1.
Without that it has no idea how to read the .inx file. It's under Help in your
tool bar.

dunno, but a quick temp fix, download (if they still have downloads and not just mailing DVD's of it) the CS3 trial, work on your files and then uninstall. By then hopefully someone on a mac can get you an answer.

I wish I could help but I haven't installed Leopard (in part for this very reason, I'm very sorry you're going through this).
Were the CS2 .inx files provided to you by someone else, or did you create them yourself?

After installing Leopard, and then installing CS1 plus the update patch to open CS2 .inx files, did you repair permissions using Disk Utility?
If not, try doing that, preferably running Disk Utility using the Leopard install disk as your startup disk.
I don't know if it will help you, but it's worth a shot.

i dont want to be stuck with another interchange problemIf you do have to use the trial for now, save files as the older versions (I believe thats what they call legacy on macs) and you souldn't have issues.
I have various versions of Illy here on different PC's and when I save from newer versions I save as the oldest version I have, and I save in two forms, eps and ai so if one doesnt work the other should. I know this is different in ID but just an illustration so to speak.
Hope this helps!

To be honest, Graphix, I think it's also a strong possibility that using the CS3 trial option might cause problems as well. There's no assurance that Interchange files exported out of CS3 will open up in CS2, and if the OS is what's causing the problem, that just seems to open up a whole can of worms.
Jriddim, if I'm understanding you correctly, you have CS1 at home, your school computers have CS2, so you're creating the Interchange files there so that you can open them up at home, is that correct? If so, do you know if the version of CS2 at school can open up CS3 Interchange files? You might want to test a file first before you fully go that route, if that's the route you decide to take.

you may be right Urst....
I did recieve files from an ad agency down the street from you that was CS3 and I couldnt open here on my home PC... I used the Trial CD Adobe sent me and opened them fine. I resaved to an older version and could open them fine after that. This is what I was basing my answer on.

Well, if my suggestion to try running the Disk Utility doesn't work, you could try testing a file with the CS3 demo and see if your school's CS2 version will open it. If it does, you're probably okay.
Of course, that solution's only good for as long as the trial period lasts (30 days?).

No worries, understandable, since you can't work on your files.
I believe all you need to do is pop in the Leopard install disk, restart with the C key held down so it uses the install disk as the start up disk.
It'll ask you if you want to install Leopard. Which you don't want to do. I think there should be an option to quit the Installer, but it leaves a menu up from which you can then run Disk Utility.
That's at least how it work in Tiger, hopefully it hasn't changed too much with Leopard.
Jriddim
11-02-2007, 04:47 AM
it says "to quit installer choose quit installer from menu then click start up disk.... so i did that now it wants to restart? is this what i want to do?
urstwile
11-02-2007, 04:50 AM
No, you don't want to choose startup disk, you want to look and see if there's a menu that shows Disk Utility as an option. Sorry, I don't have my Tiger install disk at hand at the moment (it's in a box somewhere, we just moved) or I'd tell you where exactly to look.

* if you have a permissions problem with a file installed by the mac os x installer click repiar permissions

You don't have an external hard drive installed do you? If not, then I don't think it matters, Macintosh HD is the name of the volume, the other is the manufacturer's name for the hard drive installed in your computer. Whichever one lets you do repair permissions is what you should select. Don't bother with verifying permissions, just go directly to the repair permissions button.
Particularly since you just installed a new OS, and then also installed software after that, repairing permissions, in general, is pretty much always a good idea.

I really hope this is the solution.

As I said, the first time is usually the longest. And it's probably referring to PPD's that come with most new Apple OS installs that get installed by default, so even if you don't have the printer, it still sees the files.
For future reference, what I generally do when I install any software is to first repair permissions, then install the software, then repair permissions again. Not sure if that's always necessary, but it's my knock on wood method, I guess.

i think this pretty much sums it up
right off of adobes website...
Q. Will older versions of Adobe creative software—such as Creative Suite 2 and
Macromedia Studio 8 software—support Mac OS X Leopard?
A. While older Adobe applications may install and run on Mac OS X Leopard, they were
designed, tested, and released to the public several years before this new operating system
became available. You may, therefore, experience a variety of installation, stability, and
reliability issues for which there is no resolution. Older versions of our creative software will
not be updated to support Mac OS X Leopard. For a complete overview of compatibility
between Adobe creative applications and Mac OS X Leopard, see the chart on page 2.

Um, no, sadly, it doesn't surprise me in the slightest, sadly, although from an idealistic viewpoint I see what you're saying, Graphix. But it's in the interests of these big guns to make sure people keep spending the money on the latest and greatest. More big bucks for them.
It seems like it's getting worse and worse. For example, the CS3 suite being only available to Tiger and up users on the Mac? That's a big 'un to me. It seems like the Mac OS had a longer shelf life with newer OS's in the past.

hey so I just downloaded ID CS3 trial....and it seems to work great... It opens the inx. files that wouldnt open with CS1. So now i created a CS3 inx. file and I am going to my school now to see if their CS2 can open it... If it does, than i will soon buy CS3... does anyone know how to uninstall the trial version? cause i will need to do that once i buy CS3.

Are you on a PC or Mac? If pc just go to add/remove programs in the control panel.
Also if you cant to use CS3 files on CS save them as In Copy files, they can be opened by InDesign CS.
