mmmm...it's almost that time of year! I don't want summer to end, but part of me is looking forward to all the good food! Apple donuts, pumpkin pie, mmmmmm!

If only it would ping pong back and forth between summer and fall. I'd take a sprinkling of spring to see the flowers bloom, maybe a week of good ole blizzards that shut the city down, then back to summer.

Begonias!!!!

I haven't seen them in years. My Mom loved them and we had a wrap around porch with the railing lined with them in every color.

Is that last one Peonies or a rose hybrid?

They are wonderful Garricks .. brings back good memories :)

Beautiful photos Fredrich and ckret!

Ckret, boy does that area look familiar! My sister and brother-in-law lived in the Miami area for 7 years and I spent a lot of time visiting during that time.

CkretAjint

Yepp yepp... Everything down here just about looks the same. The road/trees/flower are actually from the Sunrise (its a city) area. Pretty much the same as Miami only not as dirty! :p

tuliptree
09-05-2008, 02:21 PM
I know where that is! We did enough trecking around south Florida when they lived there (they were in four different apartments and a house in various locations during that time and we were always exploring). They never lived in Miami proper but in places like Coral Gables and other places close to UM as my brother-in-law went to grad school there and then was a prof there for a few years.

Speaking of . . . one place we used to go eat a lot was Opa in Ft. Lauderdale. OMG I loved their food. Geez, I almost wish I wouldn't have remembered that, now I am really hungry for some Greek cooking!

A few more. I love the atmosphere of the restaurant. Although, ckret, my sister tells me the one that is in my photos burned down, and they rebuilt? She said that supposedly it was because of the table dancing and napkin throwing, coupled with people's cigarettes? Have you heard this?

When did the smoking ban go into effect? It may have happened after we were there when these photos were taken (1999), and it was soon after that that the incarnation of Opa we went to burned down. Just curious. My sister only heard that that's what happened, but who knows.

I captured this sunset as the west side spin-off of now Tropical Storm Ike blew across Mustang, Oklahoma September 13, 2008. It was incredible to watch as the southbound winds met a cold front coming down from the north. It reminds me that although there was massive damage, nature also provides some eye candy. Amazingly enough, there almost appears to be an eye in the center, even though the hurricane was hundreds of miles away

It's a bit ugly, but also sometimes a part of the view itself. I don't think Times Square in New York would have been the same without all the advertising and flashing lights.

Red Kittie Kat: The bad weather is an important part of UK the way I see it, as it is in my city - which goes under the nickname Rain City. The atmosphere is almost southern-like those few days the sun actually shines, so it makes us forget the rainy days.

Oh, I don't disagree at all; it IS part of the view. Sometimes there is beauty in it, but it has always bothered me. I'd be so bummed if my artwork all of a sudden had a corporate sponsor plastered all over the bottom of it. I look at architectural works like this as masterpieces and to deface it is something I struggle with. It was just a comment on commercialism, not your work.

I saw a great documentary on CBC TV newsworld the Passionate eye series. It was about that tower, it was designed by the architect Santiago Calatrava and was quite a technical challenge to complete.
A stunning building. I understand that it was commissioned by the local people or a public investor group in Malmö, Sweden.

Correct. The HSB organization (hence the name HSB Turning Torso) owns the building. It was mainly built because of Malmö lost it's landmark when the 138-metre-tall Kockums Crane (used at the former shipyard not far from the tower site) was sold to South Korea.

We went a local bog preserve today for a walk. Didn't see a whole lot of wildlife because it was fairly crowded and people were being unfortunately loud, but as we were leaving we stumbled across this garter snake.

I really like the sharpness of the head, though the bit right behind the head is out of focus due to narrow depth of field. Granted, when I stumble across fast-moving wild critters I don't have a lot of time to fiddle with the camera settings if I want to get any pictures at all... so I am pretty happy with the shot. (I took a few before he took off, and was excited that I got one with his tongue out!) :D

Great shot, Totem!

I was actually buzzed by a hummingbird, they're extremely territorial if they feel you're jeopardizing their food source. I was sitting right near our hummingbird feeder, it hovered parallel to my face and made a couple of quick feints, apparently to move me away from its food source.

Red Kittie Kat
10-28-2008, 07:34 AM

That's kinda...cool. :) I've always thought hummingbirds lived in another dimension because they move so fast. I wonder if they see us move or are we too slow for them to notice?

On the grounds of rustic Laguna Gloria Museum in Austin, Texas today for a Photoshop class, I found myself in the path of a flock of Peacocks. I wish I had a photo! Decided to stand still and take my chances -- didn't know if they'd attack like swans or what. There were males and females and they came right up to me and then just parted around me. I was inches away from ten or so gorgeous peacocks, all around me. Very cool. - b -

Do they provide blankets at the pub so you can sit outside in the snow?

I think the blankets are there because of the smoking ban, which means you have to go outside pubs and bars to smoke a cigarette. Not sure if you are allowed to bring alcohol outside.

Red Kittie Kat
11-23-2008, 04:29 PM
Ahh ok that makes sense ... I forgot about not being able to smoke in bars anymore.

They've pushed the laws in my city so far now that you can't even smoke outdoors on the patio anymore, if it's on the property of a restaurant or bar. When you go into a convenience store in any part of town, it looks like you're in the worst inner-city slum neighborhood, and that they've boarded and barricaded themselves up from robbers. Those barricades though, are in fact a law in this city to hide tobacco products from sight. Even in a frickin' smoke shop.

By the way... I love how that cat's hair gives it such a radiant halo effect in the low sunlight in that last picture. :D
