Fredrich, thank you for posting these photos. I own this CD (http://www.amazon.com/Forbidden-Music-from-Theresienstadt/dp/B0000ADY98/ref=pd_sim_m_1) of music that was composed there while it was a concentration camp. It's truly lovely music to come from such an awful place.

No, it's in Norway, so it says 30 kroner (about USD 5).

that guy looks like a adult size garden gnome!

"Everybody" here knows about him, he's been wandering around for several years despite being over 80 years old. He is always walking like that with his bike, looking down to the ground (but he never hits anything).

I don't know a good English term for it, but directly translated homeless people who have been around long and have something distinctive about them are called city originals.

Sorry to continue with off topic here Fredrich (That really is a sharp looking photo though. :)) but I've got another Norwegian donut question. About 12 years ago when I was still in high school, we had an exchange student from Norway. She told us that they didn't have donuts in Norway. Was she lying to us or has the donut caught on in a big way during the last decade? She's on my Facebook so I can still call her out on her donut deception if I have to!!! :D

Donuts were probably somewhat rare 12 years ago compared to now (7 eleven probably helped introducing it), but to deny their existence is a bit bold. I actually remember a little donut-shop on wheels outside the local IKEA back in the days, but that's only because I don't like them and think of the sickening smell.

Seedy underbelly = gritty?

Yes, that's always a problem I've struggled with too, bladez. Moreso my problem is that I never had a camera when I was younger and used to travel. Now that I'm older I know to carry my camera bag everywhere like a purse, but I don't go anywhere anymore. :(

I'm looking to get a new pancake lens to fit on my camera, so I can carry it in my laptop bag easily. I've already got a rubber hood, filter, and cap for it, and a lightweight interchangeable strap to swap out my broad neck strap... but I have to wait for my next paycheck to clear before I can get the lens itself...

*EDIT: Sorry, I was responding from the wrong page... I love that spider picture, Mo!

I'm fortunate to live pretty close to a lot of small forests, considering the population here is around 150,000 people. Still I have never seen a spider like that before, I think you're right... it must be from the future! :D

I believe that I have tentatively identified the unidentified flowers in that first post (http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/forum/showpost.php?p=662903&postcount=679) as Bunchberry and Anemone.

And while I'm at it, I saw this one for the first time yesterday too:

I thought that they were pretty (I like shiny things :D) though I hope it isn't a destructive type.

I tried to identify it through various sources but there are a lot of shiny metallic green beetles out there! It didn't look quite like the photos I saw of the emerald ash borer, and also not quite like the dogbane beetle.

My best guess (and I'm not remotely an entomologist) is that it is a six spotted tiger beetle - without spots (it happens). The tiger beetle was actually nominated as a candidate for the provincial insect of QC, the criteria for which included that the insect be relatively well distributed here, be present in most inhabited areas, be easily recognizable, and be easy to observe.

Unfortunately, I can't be sure because none of the pictures that I found through the identification sites looked quite right to me (and while the information said that they may or may not have spots, I did not find any photos of the spotless variety). If that's what it is, it would eat small insects, spiders, and whatnot rather than trees. I sort of hope so actually, because we've got plenty of woodpeckers here to give the trees a hard time.

Top one is bunchberry (Cornus canadensis)
Couldn't tell ya on the bottom one without leaves.
Lady slippers are so cool. A long time ago I had quite a colony of them propagated by hand pollinating them and letting nature do the rest. For about 10 years. Alas they weren't on our land when the surveyors came through for a development and they always target those plants when digging test pits so they don't have to wait for 'the rescue'. We had several rescue groups in the area. Suckage. Musta been 60 plants back there. I only saved about a dozen in the aftermath.

I was guessing anemone on the second one, but am not certain. I don't seem to have taken a shot that shows the leaves, and I know better than that! (*kicks self*)

That's really a shame about your lady slippers, PD. I am glad that you were able to save some of them!

Being the ignorant boor I am, I had no idea that everybody was celebrating Pride Week in the city square today. Thankfully, I stopped by that way on my way from the Post Office and caught some of the festivities. And thankfully I had a nice long lens with me. ;)

I love that graffiti wall :D

... and I love the Drag shots ... I have a special place in my heart for those gals ;)

We have a yearly Drag Ball in Glens Falls and I want to go so bad one of these years and help them get dressed and all done up :D

I have sewn a couple dresses and done some make up and hair in the past ... but with timing I've never gotten to go to the actual event :(

Yeah, the graffiti wall was my favorite thing, too. :D I hold a fondness for them drag queens, too. I love them in my own special way, though not in the way they'd like me to. xD

That would be so fun to dress them up. You really gotta do that, Kittie!! =3

lol, yes Bladez, those're the ones. Did you know that Edmonton was listed in a major gay & lesbian publication (sorry, I can't remember the name of the magazine) as the #1 stop for a homosexual to visit in Canada, not too long ago? Pretty surprising with our redneck image, but this city is actually quite open to the gay community. I'm not gay but I think it's really cool, as I like open-mindedness. ;)

That is a nice yacht, too, fredrich. It looks like it must be huge.

It is 119 meters long, and designed by Philippe Starck. I like the fact that it does not look like any ordinary big yacht, but more like a concept model from the future.

I am loving it. It is really different out here.

Glad to hear that. It is different, I always find myself struggling to explain it to people. A lot of people who've never been there assume it's like Phoenix, but it's so completely not. They can't believe that it has cacti and snow at the same time, or that we have so much sun and can still sit outside quite comfortably in the summer evenings.

Good luck with a job there. I don't have any graphic design connections since I didn't get into the field until after I left, but I'm sure you'll find something!

I've been quiet of late because we went for another jaunt to the homeland to play in the hills with friends and family. Here are a few piccies for my favourite GDF thread...

This is the three castles car trial getting ready to depart from Llandudno's Victorian Promenade.

This is the 1920s lido at Llandudno which we splashed in (and I splashed in a lot as a kid and a drunk teenager)

Here is the view from the Vadre (a hill behind my folk's home) looking across the estuary towards Conwy. I spent a lot of time up that hill as a kid playing around the ruins of Deganwy castle.

Thanks Kittie. The castle itself is very, very old (1067) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norwich_Castle) but what you see there is a Victorian facade - apparently because the castle didn't look 'castley' enough.

Okay, we had an airshow today in my town, to which I was graciously given 4 tickets for by the Business Association in my area (I was also offered an exhibition booth, but I passed on that because I needed some time off). I may have missed out on some business ops, but I had a really good time with my friends (my favorite model and her best friend), so I think I made the right decision. There wasn't a flying display like I hoped for, but oh well... Here's a few of our snapshots:

The first building has a restaurant and pub downstairs, and some offices on the second floor I think. The second building is a club/restaurant.
