There's so many waterfalls out here, which is why I seem to have so many of them. Every hike we go on pretty much ends at, or passes by a water fall. Soon I'll be a pro at water shots *LOL*

Thanks Typ :) That's 1 of 3 that I did, all with different shutter speeds. The fast shutter speed one is pretty cool too. It's in my flickr account somewhere...I'll dig it up and add it here to compare.

doctorfoz
07-15-2009, 03:32 PM
they're really great shots Bladez (you don't need me to tell you that!). You and Audentia live in a wonderful place. I know the traditional thing to do is photograph waterfalls with a long shutter speed - but your first two have a lot more vitality to them. The third one has the balance just right -was it deliberate?

Bladez
07-15-2009, 05:30 PM
Thanks Foz :)

Yea, they were all deliberate. Generally I'll take 3 or 4 of the same shot, but I adjust my shutter speed for all of them. I'll do the first at a really fast shutter speed, to catch the stills of all the droplets, then I'll slow it down to catch 1 or 2 in the middle where I get that glassy look, but not quite the creamy look of the last pic, when I really slow my shutter down to get really capture the movement. Then when I get home and download them I can decide which worked out the best, and which I prefer. Prime example is the one behind the water fall:

shot 1
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2117/3720776263_8301cb5167_o.jpg

shot 2 (as above)
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2559/3720776863_775c6823e2_o.jpg

shot 3 didn't work out, so I didn't keep it...but you get the idea

is it hard growing broccoli and lettuce? my dad said that they get worms/bugs real easy... i'd love to try growing some broccoli!

I think it depends on where you live, I'm in Central New York so it not as hot and damp as some places and the ground up here has large amount of clay in it, but not enough to hinder growth, and I have two gardens actually, while I grow vegges in one, I fertilize the other with cow doo for a year then wait a year for the doo to break down and then I switch gardens for fertile ground :)

I also grow: peppers, green beens, peas, carrots, acorn squash, butternut squash, some sparsely, basil and oregano...oh and a few bumpkins for Halloween :)

ahhh ok we get a lot of the hot humid weather down here. my dad was saying that the white moth/butterflies are the main culprit. they get in and lay eggs and the whole crop is done for. maybe i'll have to setup a hydroponic system in the basement :D

Hmm. I would take pictures of our vegetables in the garden, but alot of our stuff is in growbags due to our soil being pretty crappy. We have some tomato's in the soil at the top of the garden but they aren't growing that well at the minute, they havent even started flowering yet.

Our chilies are starting to come through though, so I'll get some shots when they start growing the fruit instead of the flowers :)

Nice shot there John!

OH DEAR GOD NED! Scary stuff!! We had one of those come through Calgary a few months back...they booked it at the same place as a punk rock show I went to. Good combo there! A bunch of drunk and rowdy punks, and a bunch of kids dressed up as their favourite anime or video game character.....can you guess how well that went? I remember we spent a lot of time yelling at them and just being a bunch of jerks. One guy seemed to really enjoy mooning them....*LOL*

Going down, there is a scree run that was beyond fun, but because they show family and friends, I won't post them. The scree has a small ridge at one part that if you miss, you're screwed. You can't get back up the scree, and you end up on the back side of the mountain. We missed it and had to find out own path down, then up a different ridge. It got pretty scary.

Bladez
08-19-2009, 03:08 PM
CMYK, Audentia and I live in Calgary, so we're only about an hour and a half drive from the Rocky Mountains :) Those photos are actually of one of the first major mountains you notice as you start getting into them. Mt. Yamnuska is about 45 minutes from the city. We're pretty lucky to live where we do. It's always nice to be able to make a day trip to the mountains, or Banff National Park (ranked one of the top 10 places in the world to visit). However, with us being so close to the mountains, we get some unbelievably unpredictable weather. The common phrase here is "If you don't like the weather, wait 10 minutes". It literally changes hourly. It will say Sunny and Clear for the day, then 2 hours later there will be thunderstorm warnings for the area. Pretty crazy.

Fabulous area for pic, you guys are so lucky! Can't imagine having all that at my beck and call to shoot. Been up to Glacier National park but didn't cross the border. I'm looking at Google Maps, and what's coming up is Stranraer, Wigtownshire, UK, located on Loch Ryan. Is that the same place?

I spent three weeks in the UK years ago, a week driving North from London, ending up spending two weeks in Aberdeen. Some of the most beautiful land I've ever seen, and the people were just wonderful. :)

Yes, it is :) That's Loch Ryan to the right. We were about to get the ferry to Ireland from there. Scotland's a beautiful place, especially up the north. I love the area around Glen Coe, the mountains and lochs around that part of the world are stunning.

Did you spend any time in Edinburgh? I live about 10 miles to the east :) East Lothian is a lovely place too. Actually all of Scotland is! Everyone come and visit! :D

Bladez

It's on my list of places to visit. I especially want to see what's left of the family castle.

That's right....my family has a castle....well, sorta. There's only 1 tower left standing, and it doesn't belong to my family direct, but rather, the Clan owns it. But we do have ties to the clan (i.e. distant cousins). I've been told I'm supposed to get in touch with them if I ever do visit.

<slight threadjack>

My memories are a bit fuzzy, it was in 1978. We did visit Edinburgh on the way back. I remember touring a castle that had a cemetery for military dogs.

I was on tour with an orchestra. We landed at Heathrow, toured Windsor Castle, performed in Egham (sp?), Carlisle, and a couple of other cities on the way north, spent two weeks as the host orchestra for the International Festival of Youth Orchestras at the University in Aberdeen, did a bus tour of Edinburgh and flew out of Gatwick. The "tourist" things we did were very controlled (there were almost 100 of us), so I didn't get to see as much as I wanted.

A return trip is on my Bucket List, along with Australia and New Zealand.

Thanks guys. My husband put that photo up as his desktop image. :D

I did take a couple videos, eventually I'll get them up on YouTube. Nothing fancy really, just a couple seconds of roaring waterfall and rainbow.

When we first got to the falls (which I'd never actually been to before), I commented on how I suddenly felt like white water rafting. Then I saw the cliff. Didn't wanna white water raft so much then. :o

Great rainbow shot tho Virgo :D

this reminds me of 2005 when Calgary went through some intense flooding, to the point where some of the bridges ended up being under water.

Unfortunately, we got to Vegas late in the day and headed directly to the Hotel and grabbed dinner. We averaged over 500 miles each day, and the traffic at Hoover Dam killed an extra 1½ hours of drive-time.

Besides, they wouldn't let me take pictures of the strippers anyway :(

Really beautiful pictures of beautiful places on show in this thread. Wanna contribute to the showcase with a picture of the Ammergau Alps. That's an amazingly beautiful spot in Upper Bavaria. For your orientation: Munich is 80km (about 50 miles) North and Neuschwanstein is 20 km to the West.

I used to work there but went back to my hometown in Saxony. But as we are talking on a global scale I think that still counts as my part of the world.

Stephan_dP

you have to look around quite a while to find a powerline. And billboards aren't much of an issue in nowhere areas. Fortunately.

By the way: at the end of this valley is Linderhof Palace of King Ludwig II: the only one of his palaces he ever saw completed. I hope the picture shows why he chose this spot. Unfortunately I never found the time to capture the magic atmosphere in the morning hour when mist is rising from the damp valley floor - truly a sight to behold!

New camera I'm trying to figure out. Used to do 35mm, quit a number of years ago (time & money), and just now switching from digital Instamatic clones to DSLR. I still remember the basics, just have to figure out "how to get there from here"...

This is in our back yard. Some of the peonies have bloomed and withered, some are blooming, some haven't opened yet. This one is just starting to open...
