This will be a community thread for everyone to post pictures in, so feel free to participate regardless of your level of experience. :)

I find it really interesting to see the differences in landscapes, architecture, flora, fauna and whatnot from around the world.

Please post your photos with the location where the photo was taken (this can be general; State or Province, etc. is sufficient) and a brief description (the subject in the photo, and when it was taken, etc.).

Have fun, and happy shooting!

Here's a shot I took on a nature hike last weekend. It's autumn here (in QC, Canada) and these birch trees are just starting to change color.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c343/gdfmorea/pics/birchtrees.jpg

I took this one while wading out into the river to try to get a picture of a heron on the opposite bank. The little bugger took off before I was close enough to get a decent shot of him, but I took the opportunity to snap a picture of the changing foliage behind the dam:

I would post Morea... but for some reason sand and rocks aren't that interesting to me!

I miss Florida and the east coast in general. :(

post 'em anyway. I bet they are interesting to people who don't have sand and rocks where they live (and have to walk to work, uphill both ways all year round) :p

Here's another shot - I am not sure what kind of plant this is, but the ladybug seemed to like it.

Great thread idea, Morea. It's really neat seeing where everyone else is. I'll share some of mine, but first I have to apoligize for the quailty. My equipment sucks and I'm not much better. Anyways:

This first one is just outside of the town that I went to school in in Wyoming. I love this place.

Buffalo in the Park

This was taken just outside of my apartment. It's the smoke from a fire near Big Timber, Montana a couple hundred miles away. The pink dot in the middle of the sky is the sun.

There was a whole litter of five baby foxes and thier Mama living in this abandoned cabin near Cooke City, Montana. Only a few of the pictures turned out because it was dusk, but it was fun watching them play. They were climbing all over the cabin and pushing each other off the roof and everything.

I have the camera set to hard sharpness. I don't like to do postprocessing, so with that setting I can just do a batch resize and I'm done. Photos look a little too sharp at full-size, but you never display them at full-size. They also print a little better, since printing tends to soften the focus, to my eyes.

These are Aboriginal wells, 20 minutes' walk from my house, showing axe-grinding grooves and, in the top well, what seems to be the faint outline of a fish.

Aboriginal and European travellers alike used these wells when passing through the mid-Mountains.

Yeah, sometimes they are so cute I think I'm going to barf! :p :D

That palm tree is humungous! The thing that amazed me about the weird and wonderful plants in California was the flowering Aloe. I couldn't believe how tall the flowers were! There was one down the road from us that was taller than a three story house!!! It just doesn't look possible from the size of the plant.

urstwile
10-03-2007, 07:22 AM
Yeah, the palm tree is pretty outsized, especially when you consider that our neighborhood is fairly urban.

I've only really seen them that big in resort areas, this one is humongous, probably about 14 feet tall (a guesstimate, based on my husband's height and how many of him it would take to climb to the top if he were stacked up times two or two and a half, yeah, I measure funny, but it works). Plus, I'm not sure what the tree next to it is, it looks evergreen-ish, but I can't remember seeing evergreens so tightly wrapped like that one.

urst, I'm not familiar with that model Fuji camera that you have, but if it allows exposure compensation, it's pretty much accepted as fact that Fuji's tend to overexpose. Try setting the camera two thirds of a stop down. It really helps with Fuji's.

lmao...

Actually, they are turning it into condos, hotels and shopping centers. Just looking for money first, but they want to preserve the buildings. this has happened a lot in Milwaukee, the Blatz brewery turned to condos, the Schlitz turned into a business development and Miller's still holdin strong.

But yes, when these breweries were up and running there was nothing you could do to escape the smell, it wa spretty nasty.

From Wikipedia:
"A funicular, also known as a funicular railway, inclined railway, inclined plane, or cliff railway, is a type of self-contained cable railway in which a cable attached to a pair of tram-like vehicles on rails moves them up and down a very steep slope, the ascending and descending vehicles counterbalancing each other."

Our is called "Fløibanen" and is the only cable car of its kind in Scandinavia. Some people use it to get home/to work, most of the people use it to access tour areas on/down the mountain (walking, skiing, sledging etc.), and the tourists like the view from the top.

Ah, okay, so it's like the incline that goes up Mount Washington in Pittsburgh. When we last visited (his family's from there), my husband and I took that to get to the top, it's a tramlike thing that goes up the mountain. We had pierogis when we got to the top. They were yummy. :)

Not really. It's a sculpture thingy in the park. Basically, it's like the cornices of ruined buildings sticking out of the ground. It's really, really cool. I thought I had a lot more photos of it, but I can't seem to find them. Might have to wander back there with my camera next time the weather's good.

They are the 4th generation of cable cars since 1918 (they came in 2002, so they are pretty new). The previous ones were from 1974. The new cars were a part of a complete renewal of the funicular, from ticket systems to tracks and graphic profile.

So I live in South Africa. It's impossible to sum it up with one pic. These are places I've lived and places I've been to. (links to bigger pictures below each description)

Starting from left to right, top to bottom:

1. Durban CBD, East coast of SA
http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc166/5StarRich/Durban-1.jpg

2. The view from my flat in Durban, winter sunrise

3. To get from Durban to Johannesburg you traverse a mountain range, The Drakensberg
http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc166/5StarRich/Drakensberg.jpg

4. The most desolate place I've been to in SA, Verneukpan, Karoo desert, Northern Cape

5. Eastern Cape mountains at dawn

6. South Africa's own ski resort (Tiffinell), at the very end of season (hence the lack of snow!!)
http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc166/5StarRich/Skiing.jpg

7. Cape Dutch style house on a wine farm in the Western Cape

Yeah, that flat rocked! 7th storey, on top of a hill that was a nature reserve, rolling down to a golf course and then Indian Ocean! The winter sunrises were amazing! I now live in the husle & busle that is Johannesburg, a city with a higher population concentration than any other province, let alone city. That said, jo'burg is still picked up by satellites as a rain forest. You have to see south africa to believe it!

Never been to any parts of Africa, but I've heard that one neighbourhood called Hillbrow in Johannesburg is pretty rough. In which part of the city do you live?

bigrich1
11-26-2007, 01:04 PM
Lol, yeah, Hillbrow is a "problem area" in the jo'burg CBD. It's the classic case of nigerian drug dealers and pimps buying up a whole lot of slum property and making it their world. I live in the leafy suburbs of Sandton. I think the amount of electric fencing and high brick walls freak some people out, but I guess I've just grown up with it. SA has a crime issue, no doubt, but I love it here.

Nice Toad. What part of Montana? Are those the Beartooths in the black and white?

The first three pictures were taken in Broadus, MT. My girlfriend and I were visiting some friends and while there decided to wander the countryside looking for old homesteads.

The fourth, black and white, photo was taken in Glacier Nat. Park.

The final photo was taken in Yellowstone Nat. Park.

Speaking of Beartooth the first photo below is from Beartooth Pass in Wyoming/Montana. Also shown below is a couple more images of Glacier and one of Yellowstone. I have a ton of photos to post for ya'll but I don't have my home computer up and running yet--just moved.

My sister lives in West Glacier--West Entrance to Glacier Nat. Park. I usualy visit her every other year, taking some quick shots along the way. It's fun trying to drive all the way out there in one straight shot, 24 hrs. from Madison, WI. That country is beautiful anytime of year. (I worked in Glacier last year. Great times.)

We adopted four promethia moth caterpillars last summer and over wintered them in a butterfly pavilion. They need freezing temperatures to complete their cycle (crazy pillars!) and they supposedly emerge in May.

Ours didn't, so I was disappointed, but then was surprised today when the first one came out of its cocoon! Coincidently a "wild" one flew into our garage right about the same time the other hatched (perhaps from the same bunch as we collected our caterpillars from the tulip tree in our front yard).

Here are some images of ours (brown, a female) and the "wild" male (black, larger). I believe they are the second largest moth in the US (possibly North America).

If that thing is the second largest moth, then I saw the largest outside a 7-11 once. Thing was bigger than a sparrow, but whitish/gray. It was kinda scary.

tuliptree
06-14-2008, 01:16 AM
Thanks Virgs! Yeah, they are hoooge! The largest is the cecropia moth Virgo. There's the cecropia (largest in North America) and also polyphemous and luna moths that are very very large, too. I think the polyphemus (like the one eyed mythological dude) are the greyish ones. Does this look like what you saw?

Not a dumb question at all typically! Actually the flower that is my avatar is the tulip tree bloom! They're really cool. From the ground looking up they don't look like much, they are sort of washed out yellow, but the inside is amazing!

Down south tulip tree is something else (I think what I call a magnolia if I'm remembering right?) One of my first conversations here on GDF when I joined.
