Hi I just started doing graphic design. I want to get into VJing and motion graphics. Typography is by far the hardest part I find and often lets my stuff down. Anyway, I wanted to post up some logos I did as I'm going to be doing some VJing with some DJ mates locally. Comments/crit would be really really appreciated even if they're bad and maybe why sth doesn't work. I really want to get better.

Also, what's the best way of educating myself about typography. At the moment I'm going through Kate Clair's typography workbook. Also when professional designers do stuff do they ever use freeware fonts? I see so many I like on T26!!

Anyway onto the logos:D Hopefully it will link straight up. I've hosted them on a fre place -I'm pretty new to this...

Vj is video jockeying or video jamming. Most people know of it via MTV where it just meant a presenter introducing music videos but it has a long history via colour painting (Kandinsky etc) experimental film/visual music (Len Lye etc), psychedelic light shows and aesthetically thru Soviet montage ,special effects etc

Basically a VJ mixes visuals live usually in a club setting while the DJ does his/her thing. These visuals are loops with film, flash files and usually synced to the beats. These are projected on different surfaces -screens, smoke etc. Typical software would be using Premiere, After Effects. The loops are triggered and mixed live with special software such as VJamm and can even be triggered by wearable interfaces such as LED suits, datagloves. Content is usually original, creative commons, stock or some people remix tv and iconic moments from films for example.

Some filmmakers doing this stuff are Peter Greenaway and Mike Figgis. It's just a wonderful coming together of art & technology:D

Thanks for the comments regarding logo

I like all of them, but I don't like the VJ text.... do you need that? The rest of the logos look great.

no don't really need to add vj bit..i was thinking about not having that too just because if the logo gets printed small i thought maybe it would disappear and i wasn't sure if it was quite right...i'm still learning all about mixing fonts :-) lol!

I really dig the name "VJ Voodoo" - but I don't know if the logo tells me anything about the business. Plus it looks like you have one concept rehashed several different ways. It's also quite static - I think the look needs to be moving, flexible and fun - all things a DJ and VJ needs.

Keep what you have and go some different routes. For me I see a DVD with those voodoo needles sticking in it. Or a crazy medicine man controlling the mixer. just some thoughts.
