I see alot of brushes that would be great in a signiture or peice- is it considered cheating to use them?? I usually only use them in signitures...
Also- are you allowed to use brushes for commercial purposees???

what do you mean allowed? you can use brushes whenever you want. Professional designers dont use them because it makes their work look amateur and cliche.

When you don't have the time or your client doesn't have the budget to create your own, they are nice to have. They are just tools so I think it is fine to use for commercial purposes - unless you are trying to trademark a brush image or something.

i do take back a little what i said, brushes can be used appropriately, but ive seen some crap like converting outlines to a wierd-o brush stroke because it 'looks cool'. No, it doesnt.

Not cheating to me. No problems using a brush or creating one.
But....use them wisely. alot of mis-use of them out there.

brushes are a great tool when used correctly :)

Brushes are like fonts. Some are free some aren't. Read the fine print, if any, for commercial use.

Yes...I agree 100%.
I use brushes in my car artwork but I use them for highlighting, shading...I sneek them into little details on some of my car renderings.
Now...would I use an ordinary 'brush stroke' as a background or for an original design or logo...no.
Many times I'll see a logo or graphic somewhere and I'll say to myself "hey...that's a brush stroke from Illy'. if you plan to use them for anything that'll get high visibility do something to it to make it 'different' somehow.
That's my .02¢.

I use brushes for grundge, some swirly stuff, stars, lights, some I've created myself for future use.
I'm not going to sit here and recreate the wheel everytime I need an effect brush.
however, I do agree with everyone here that many times brushes are misused, over used, and used badly. But is it cheating, nope.

It's not cheating, unless you're entering the piece in some contest or something where the rules specifically forbid their use. Why that would ever happen is beyond me.
But like everyone says, use them wisely. They're a tool. Tools are there to help you do something. You wouldn't build a house out of hammers, screwdrivers and saws. You use hammers, screwdrivers and saws to help you build the house. ;)

The key is to use them so they look like the are original. If they are instantly recognisable, then you fail!
It's like that horrid blue and tan gradient you see everywhere (especially on deviantart). It's not that hard to make your own gradients kids!!!

I use brushes regularly. Three times a day with my teeth. And once a week with my toilet.
(I've coloured coded them to avoid confusion.)

I don't think it's cheating. Depends on how you use them. I think maybe 5 years ago you could get away with making a logo with one. But now it's an "easy way out" for some design solutions.
I use them all the time when doing illustrations. Try creating you own custom brush.

Using a computer is cheating. You should make your own paper and charcoal pencils and go from there. :D

Charcoal and paper? You kids today don't know how easy you got it. When I was a lad, we had to chisel our designs into stone tablets! With out teeth!
Also, it was uphill to work - both ways!

reminds me of the time I lost a boot in about 2 feet of snow....when I pulled out to turn around the "hole" colapsed and burried my boot. not so fun in stocking feet. ;)
