Hi,
I have lately been employed doing a lot of posters for a nightclub that i work at and I am new at it so i want to hear some feedback on the posters I have done so far.
Target market is various on all the posters however the nightclub caters from 18 to late thirties however the majority are between 18 and 25. Size that it is printed at is A3 and A4.
In order of doing them they are as below... (I have been getting critque from this website and another so I want to see if I am improving).
I am a self taught student in my first year.
Can you see any 'style' or bad habits or whatever. ANY comments / suggestions welcome as usual :)
Please also critque the last poster because i have received no feedback on that at all. I had no pictures to work with except a 400 pixel 72dpi pic :S

I think you are improving. Your compositions are getting stronger. How do you work out composition? Are you straight to computer or do you draw thumbnails on paper first to work out the strongest compositions given the elements you have?
You would benefit a lot by reading up on typography and generally just studying what is around you. Whenever you see a poster or a billboard or anything should be asking yourself. What works? What doesn't? What would I change about this piece? What would I leave just the way it is?

Usually i mindmap just general things that would be associated with the theme and target market and then do a couple of sketches however ive never ever kept to the original idea on the paper, something always get changes but i spose thats the process of design.
what do you mean about reading up on typography? am i doing something wrong?
i have a scrap book that i put nightclub posters into from 3 magazines released weekly and flyers that i find on the net so thats pretty handy.

Poster #2 is the strongest out of all these.

I think the "Disco Chix" poster was the most-on point, though certain elements seemed slightly disconnected from one another. I think the photo of the model makes her seem more "rocker" than "disco", but the compositions are definitely improving.
Jack, in poster #4, is that italic "Lucida"? I can't really see the dot over the "i" to tell. I ask because if it is, I think you would have been better served using another face. With rare exception, I try to stay away from system-issue typefaces for commercial work because they are so watered down they don't help identify the brand.
Check out the following links I pulled for a set of nightclubs that all operate under the name "Pacha" – they use the same logo all over the world, but each club uses slightly different style rules to define itself.

If you come upon a rough style set for the club, I think it might make your life easier. Just do some word associations with each night you are promoting and then drill down some design associations with what you come up with, but keep the work recognizable and help them build the brand.

We use a book in school called "Type & Image" written by Philip B. Meggs. It has some awesome samples you may be interested in seeing as well as excellent information on layout.
Good luck...I like your work, esp. the Dru Hill poster.
