This could be a big move and a big deal.

That's gotta be the biggest name in music I've ever seen go independent.

Will other acts follow suit, and will this change and shake up the music industry? I certainly hope so. Fight the man!

yeah he talked about this in an interview after the last album. he was pissed because he went into a cd store and saw his newest cd was priced about $10 more then everyone elses. he said he had 2 more albums to do with his major label then he was going independent.

with the RIAA winning there first lawsuit in MN this past week, I can see alot more artists ditching there labels and going indy. its a smart move too because I don't support the RIAA, Sony, Virgin any of the big lables, they can all eat a dick as far as im concerned. they need to get out of there caves and figure out a way to profit in a time of changing technologies, just like they did 20 years ago when they were all up in arms over people exchanging "mixed tapes"

Did you see the concert footage on youtube when he told fans to start stealing the music after he found out they still didn't lower the price?

Thats awesome!
the music industry is one messed up industry right now, i agree that it needs some major changes..

Radiohead just became independent too... in fact, their new album "in Rainbows" will be released this Wednesday on their website for download.
And get this, the buyer decides on the price they want to pay for it!!!

you can go here to get it: www.inrainbows.com

i didnt see the concert footage, but he basically said the same thing in the interview i read. he even said he downloads music illegally and knows that something has to change.

did you see that trent left his own comment on that dig, pretty effin cool...

08 October 2007: Big News

"Hello everyone. I've waited a LONG time to be able to make the following announcement: as of right now Nine Inch Nails is a totally free agent, free of any recording contract with any label. I have been under recording contracts for 18 years and have watched the business radically mutate from one thing to something inherently very different and it gives me great pleasure to be able to finally have a direct relationship with the audience as I see fit and appropriate. Look for some announcements in the near future regarding 2008. Exciting times, indeed."

What cracked me up was when Trent was leaving thumbdrives of his unreleased stuff in bathroom venues on purpose (expecting people to share it and spread the word). The RIAA goes after some sharers, and Trent points out that they're pursuing something THE LABEL CLEARED.

I heard about Radiohead a while a go, and now NIN. I like what Radiohead are doing, because you can still buy the 'deluxe' set of their new album for £40. I think that they are also releasing the album on CD in December. Personally, if I know the content is worth the money and I like the overall 'package' - I'll pay for the CD. I want the artwork and design to be quality, as well as the music.

Reznor seems to be pretty close with their designer/photographer, Rob Something-or-other, so I'd imagine whatever is new will be up to par with the last several CD designs. David Carson did the design for The Fragile, and said he was excited to work with Reznor, so hey, who knows there? He mentioned in the past of the possibility of selling the entire album on the site for $4, and a physical product may be available.

Have you seen the Raygun article on NIN? The photos and design were great. One of the reason I took notice Carson was because of that.

The package for Year Zero is wonderful, especially the heat-sensitive cd.

I've been hankering to see NIN live again. I hope they tour soon. :(
