Creating Outlines in Illustrator

How do you create outlines in Illustrator CS without using a stroke?

Use a stroke and then outline your strokes so they are flat shapes and cannot be altered when scaling.

ok, but how do you outline a stroke and make it a flat shape?

Expand

then merge

select the stroke, go to object > path > outline stroke.

Bingo. Make sure delete your original stroke line as it will still be under the new shape.
