currently one of my jobs is a student worker position at my university, handling web and print design. my most recent project is the re-design of our university's book/apparel store -- it holds everything from textbooks, general books, apparel, insignia, and even computers/computer software.

their goal was to look more like a retail site, rather then carry the exact same template that they stole from our main university homepage. it's still suppose to represent the university since it's part of it, but just enough to where branding can be seen but not overpower the design.

this is what i came up with -- the main picture can be changed depending on the sale/promotion, as well as the three features under it. you can ignore the first feature with the hard-to-read text, since i made the large image about winter clothing that one will be dropped soon anyway.

i'm curious to see what you guys think in terms of the goal: create a univeristy's site that's appealing to the eye and recognizable as a retail store, yet still make it seem somewhat attached to the school.

any C&C is welcome, it's still only in the composite stages, and this is only the landing page -- the secondaries will come later.

thanks!

ps: ignore their 'summer' attire in the picture, they haven't held the winter photoshoot yet so i had to put in pictures that will be easily replaced once they get new ones! and the background photo is actually a really recognizable spot from campus too, so keep that in mind. (rules rules rules :] )

I'm very distracted by two things:

The glow behind the two students and the "winter apparel available now" and the font used for the menu.

Other than that, not bad. I think I'd like to see mroe of that light blue you're using as an accent color.

okay, cool -- yea the glows are kind of too noticable. i'll play with the font face/coor of the winter apparel and see if i can get it to look less 'i sit here and play with filters all day' :)

the main reason for the glow for the cutouts of the people was to hide the awful cutout job, as well as try to make them the most obvious items when the page is opened. i don't want the background image to overpower them. i'll see how it works with that lessened down a bit.

haha, sadly it's not even a hat, he has a funny shaped head and the way the cutout blends with the bandana or headband, whatever he's wearing, it makes it look like a hat. :-x

so it's actually not helping that much! ha!
