is page numbering just down to preference or is there a rule e.g. the front cover on a brochure should be page 1 (though not marked as etc)?
Thanks!

I count the cover as 1. But I could be wrong on this.

Are you asking cause you are putting numbers on your pages (book? flyer? brochure?)? Or are you counting pages for your printer quote?

No idea.... I always started page one on the page after the inside cover.
Although, for brochures I didn't think the pages were normally numbered?

If it's a short simple piece like a newsletter, where the cover is more than just a cover (ie there's body copy on there like an article) I'll start the numbering from the cover. If the cover is just a cover, I start the page numbering on the next right-side page.

And on those newsletters, I rarely if ever actually put the page number on the first page. If the reader needs it there to tell him/her that it is in fact the first page, then they're stupid and don't deserve to read it. ;)

Sometimes with larger books page 1 starts on the right side several pages into the book. That's because of ads, contents pages etc.
Otherwise it can be cover or first page inside on the right.
I start my numbering from a random number, usually between 5-8. Then each subsequent page after that is numbered by the second power to the page previous. The numbers get a little large towards the end of the document, but it works.

Cover is page 1, but not actually numbered, first inside spread is 2-3, sometimes numbered, sometimes not, depending on content, and the rest I just pick from a hat until I get to the back cover, which is always page 69, regardless of how many pages there are.
