Does any one have a Pantone tint book?
I need to find the pantone reference for 60% PMS315.
It sounds funny but the printers I am using to brand our site clothing can't print tints they need the exact pantone reference and even a CMYK value wont work.

I have spoken to our head office who have suggested the a colour that is nowhere near the original.

Thanks in advance

Hint, The pantone tint reference is a fandeck showing the PMS color at various percentages. It doesn't give cross references to 100% PMS swaps. We finally had to buy one because we couldn't seem to get across to designers that having a 100% PMS color instead of a tint is FAR safer.

Pick a Pantone that you think approximates 60% of your original color. Pantone may not think the way you do or you may be unpleasantly surprised, as often happens. (and large format or direct to fabric printing adds a whole new layer of suspense when the percentages break down in rip and you get pink instead of blue. Happens).

As PD mentioned, there's no exact science. Spending 30 seconds on it I found PMS 549, maybe 5493 as kind of close to 60% of 315. You might agree, you might disagree.

Yuck. 60% of 315 has a lot of black in it. On a quick check (you got 2 minutes of my lunch time) the only 100% color that even comes close is 7459 and it is a tad bright.
This is coated by the way. Makes a big difference if your clothing printer is using flats (uncoated)...

See, we disagree already.

That's because you gave Jam 2 minutes, I only gave him 30 seconds. But in this case I would trust you (printer expert extrordinaire) over moi.

PrintDriver as always your full of good advice.
I have basically picked up the logo (created by someone else) and finding that direct to fabric printing is going to be a pain in the rear. There doesn't seem to be a Pantone colour that matches the original at 60% - I am now thinking of making it 100% anyway and doing away with the tint altogether

PANTONE 549 is the closest to it according to Photoshop...

It took me two minutes cuz I had to find the tint books first. We keep em locked up.

I'll never concede to a program's guess without a print test. Sometimes you need to go one or two steps darker or lighter on a percentage to make it work visually.

Oh man, one of my professors railed against tints. She was nice about it, but she basically said "If you plan on using tints or transparencies for a color, you'll get mixed results." She would make us replace them if she caught us using them in a file. Best advice she could have given us.

Sorry for bringing this back from the dead, but I'm having issues trying to get the equivalent Lab / CMYK / RGB / HSB codes for PMS 842C. Unfortunately Adobe Photoshop CS3 skips Pantone 815C through 871C. Is there a reason for this? Is there another way for me to find what I'm looking for without purchasing another program or book from Pantone? TIA for any help!

I went to the Pantone Web site, clicked on "Find a color" and entered 842 C. This was the result:
There are no results for the code and criteria entered.
PANTONE MATCHING SYSTEM ®: Numbered colors consist of three or four digits followed by a substrate extension of either a C, an M or a U. The substrate letter must be entered.

The swatch fan I have here at home (that I never use any more) is from 1990 and doesn't go up that high. The only values in the 800 range are the flourescents and metallics. Sorry I can't be of more help.

I work at a printing company and I couldn't find any instance of PMS 842 in any of our guides. Are you sure that you've got the correct number?

As Garricks said, PMS 800 range numbers are fluoros and metallics.

No 842c. You might want to recheck that callout.
PMS Process 84-2 on the other hand is a crimson red...

We (full color process + spot) use some 800 but as someone said earlier is metallics.

8420 is pewter silver...
?
CMYK, RGB etc. equivalents never equal metallics. Ask your printer how to spec them.

Thanks for all your help everyone! I went back to the mill (again) telling them all the notes you guys mentioned. The representative got back to me and told me that "7442 is the reference color". No idea where the 842C she gave me twice came from... Thanks again!

Over the holidays, a tie box for some ties they were giving away to clients was printed in that purple. They used a green ribbon around it and when they showed me I immediately thought of the Joker. The Hulk works too.

I don't mind purple, but I would've preferred a very dark regal purple. That particular purple being used is sorta in the middle of the spectrum...
