I'm desperately looking for the mandarin character for "tong" meaning hand I believe? But it's definently called "tong". Does anyone know of where I can find the chinese/mandarin character map for the Adobe Suite or MS Word? I need the symbol for a client's logo. Thanks for any help in advance!

Maybe you should try a Chinese forum for the Chinese character?

As for the software, I can't help there, but stick around someone else may be able to.

Are you able to ask your client for help or are they not Chinese?

If they are not Chinese, you need to be particularly careful when using another language for a logo. You don't want to offend anyone!

Knew a guy that got a Japanese character tattooed on himself. He picked it out of the book at the tattoo parlour. When he asked one of our Japanese friends to confirm (after he got the tattoo), our Japanese friend said that it definately wasn't Japanese and he didn't know what it said. I think maybe the tattoo parlour made up the characters or something as a joke.

So when you do get a solution, run it by at least 2 people to confirm you got the right thing!

We've all seen hilarious Engrish language written on Chinese and other countries export products! It can be a disaster!

Well the client isn't Chinese and he's given me a crude drawing of it, but I'm not good with freehand illustration. It's not that big of a project, just for a small businesses logo, but I really can't find anything anywhere. I'd like a character I could edit in Illustrator or something if possible. I thought I could just google it and copy and paste it or something. So yeah, I know what it looks like but I have no digital copy of it. Is there any font package I could get or something for Illustrator or Word?

Ive had to do some interior work for a chinese restaurant. I ended up finding a website that had the symbols for different meanings, took a screenshot, and then re drew it in illustrator. its goint to be your best bet for just a logo/one symbol type deal.

I'm not even remotely Chinese speaking, but I can use the fish (http://babelfish.altavista.com/).

Ok, I will try and ask my mother next time I see her to write hand down for me in Chinese. I promise to try and remember. Hand hand hand hand hand....hand. I think I will remember now.

Then at least you have someone I trust's opinion. It's up to you whether or not you wanna trust my mum.

I know how to say a few dirty things in Chinese. But I don't think that will help you in this venture.... Not to mention that I don't even know if it's in Mandarin or Cantonese....

Ok, I used babelfish and emailed what it came up with for hand (手) to my mother. I also asked if it was appropriate to use this character in a logo to represent hands. Some characters are useful only in a certain context so that would be important here.

I will let you know what she says when she emails me back. Might not be until Monday though since that's when she normally checks her emails. Hope you can wait til then.

thanks a TON for the help guys, much appreciated. I'm really trying to avoid having to draw it as I'm not good at all at freehand illustration. I do know that it is Mandarin, and maybe it stands for "China Hand"? I do know it's called "Tong". I'm confused on it as well :(

You be the judge. About 9% of NZ's population is Asian with about 30-40% of that Chinese. A lot of these will be mainland China, Mandarin speakers though, but we do have a few HK people here too.

Dear... sweet... lord... what happened to my question? I got all excited when I saw multiple pages of comments :( Anyway, still in dire need of help if anyone can solve the riddle. Here it is again just as a refresher:

Does anyone know of where I can get a vector image of a specific chinese/mandarin character? Or if not vector, simply something I can import or paste into Illustrator to create a logo? They just want the mandarin character "tong" included in there logo.

budafist
10-14-2007, 04:24 AM
Yup, you'll have to sit tight.

Also we came to the conclusion that "tong" was definately not the Cantonese pronounciation of "hand", but could still be correct in Mandarin. In any case, Cantonese and Mandarin are written the same so it really doesn't matter how hand is pronounced in Mandarin.

What is your client's business by the way?

about 10% of toronto's population is chinese, but they're clumped together, so you get certain areas where the majority is chinese.

Mum said:

Yes, correct writing of hand

However, I am thinking that may be another character more suitable as a logo for works done by hand.

OK, a bit of role reversal here...imagine a Chinese company that wants the English word meaning hand inserted into their logo. They look up Phalanges in a dictionary and it seems to mean what they are after. Now, while phalanges means fingers and could represent a hand, it's probably not a good idea to put the word Phalanges in a logo. Understand?
