Im doing a dissertation on colour theory and I am sending out emails to small companies enquiring about their logos and colour scheme decisions...

Here it is...

Dear Sir or Madam:

I am currently in my third year at the University College for the Creative Arts and am writing a dissertation on Colour theory. This dissertation focuses primarily on the psychology of colour from a consumer’s perspective in the world of branding and advertising.

I am contacting you with regards to your company logo and would be ever so grateful if you could take a few minutes to answer the following questions which will assit me greatly on this topic.

Firstly, when deciding on colour schemes for a logo, was it the company or the designer who chose them?

What was the criteria in regards to colour, how has it been used to affect to create a unique and lasting identity?

And lastly, does psychological association with colour play any part in choosing a colour scheme and if so, who would be consulted on this matter? Where would the research for this come from?

As you are graphic designers and no doubt do work for logos, branding, advertsing etc... I was wondering if you could help me with my questions. Does your client specify a colour scheme (if there isn't continuity, i.e its a business starting from scratch) If you get to choose your own colours what are the decisions behind this, does the pyschology of how we relate to colour and associate things with it have any influence in the decision making process? Do you think companies use colour to target consumers and get the most revenue? Do you belive colour affects a brand etc...?

I know you're all great thinkers so you'll do me proud

Thankyooou

not to sound like the grammar police, but if this is going to companies, you might want to do a spell check. Assist is the first one I noticed.

Shit... ha I did actually do a spell check, how odd. I haven't sent it out yet so I'll change that minor error. Grammar police? Is there a need for that comma after companies? Oh and a capital letter at the start of a sentence please :P

Your questions are quite vague and the answers you get back can be quite wordy. I think you should narrow your focus on them and tighten up your wording some.

Is there anyway to make this a multichoice questionnaire? Or at least 1 word answers. No one will have the spare time or the inclination to write an wordy answers for you. You should number your answers so that the reader knows after which questions there should be an answer.

fix this too:
how has it been used to affect to create a unique and lasting identity?
do you mean "to effect"?

Budafist has a point. Several of them actually.

Does that make me pointy?

Are you a relation of Captain Pointy?

I'd opt for a few multiple choice tick box style and one or two very easy to answer wordy questions. You've got to balance out the usefulness of the info you can get and the number of responses you can expect to get from your style of questioning.

Are you posting out or emailing out the questions. If it's posting then you'll need stamped self addressed envelopes to get any quantity of feedback.

Are you going to research who to send to, so it doesn't just end up in a secretary's circular out tray?
