Hi all...I am a graphic design major and my assignment this week is to interview a professional illustrator. Is there anyone out there that will answer some questions via email so that I can get an "A"??? :)
I am new to this forum and I am looking forward to soaking up new information...I can not wait to get out there and work!

Welcome ixmihrt
What are the questions? Post them here and maybe instead of 1 person answering you will get many responses... pick and choose what you feel will get you that A!

What type of work do you do?
I am a "Production Artist".
Which is your preferred media?
Ink and Paper. I like markers a lot as well.
How do you begin a job…what steps do you take to ensure a successful design?
Read on the job description what the designer/client wants done. Follow those procedures while still taking into account what is best for the company brand and feel.
Have you ever been approached for a job that you did not support or believe in? Did you take or refuse the job?
Not yet. I have done somethng some people might not lie, but i haven't found the offending to myself (I have printed billboards for porn shops before). *shrugs*
Is money a key factor in why you decide to take on the challenge of a design?
I get paid by the hour and do what I am told...
Do you have some works that I could reference?

How long have you been working in the field?
Full-time with a degree, 3 years. I also freelanced and interned during college so that would be 6 years then.
How did you know that designing/illustrating was something that you wanted to do?
Ever since I could scribble with a crayon I have been 'above average' in drawing. So Graphic Design was the only logical thing I ever knew how to do. I was born to be a designer, plain and simple.
What was your most interesting design job?
Every year I get to do all the production work on our companies sweepstakes collateral materials. This year is it 6 posters, 2 lead boxes, 3 lead slips, 2 banners, and a few other odds and ends. Color correction, photo manipulation. Illustrations work. Logos. I <3 it all!
What was your most boring design job?
*shrugs* I mindless scanning and de-archiving I have to do here and there.

Thanks so much for answering my questions...I actually just had two more...What is your particular style and philosophy? and how did you come up with your style?
I had a chance to look at your work. The t-shirt designs are really cool and the photo manipulation is truly amazing. I love to do manipulations, but I am not that good yet. Which program do you prefer for that?
Thanks again.

What is your particular style and philosophy?
Style, don't really have one. What ever I wanna do I create! Philosophy, umm... get the work done?
how did you come up with your style?
Years of practice and usng what I like over nad over again until it evolves into something else. If I don'e like the out come, I dont' do it again.
Which program do you prefer for that?
All of my Illustrations were done in Illustrator. And all of the photo manipulations work was done entirely in Photoshop. ;)
Real deep, I know!

Yep, my "Illustrations" and "T-shirts" pages are all done Illustrator. And "Photo Manipulation" is all Photoshop. Practice, practice, practice... ;)
Well, we can't be having SecretAgent the Lion Hearted be the only one to step to bat... I'll give this one a go... I won't read any of Secret Agent the Lion Hearted's answers until after I'm done, so as to not taint my answer. ;)
What type of work do you do?
I specialize in print design, working largely in display ads for newspaper and magazine, as well as brochures, posters, flyers, marketing booklets, signs, and... stuffs.
Which is your preferred media?
Print. :D I am fortunate to be able to work in the medium which I love so.
How do you begin a job…what steps do you take to ensure a successful design?
Always start with a concept. Best if this concept is sketched out on paper (depending on the scope of the project). Any design without a concept is dead.
Have you ever been approached for a job that you did not support or believe in? Did you take or refuse the job?
I have not had to refuse any job due to moral conflict of the cause or ideal behind the project, but I have refused many jobs because the client or benefactor was uncooperative, or behaved in an inappropriate and unprofefssional manner.
If you did take the job, how did you approach it?
Not Applicable. :)
Is money a key factor in why you decide to take on the challenge of a design?
Not necessarily, no. Quantity of money is secondary to whether the job can be completed effectively when taking into account my taskload at hand. If I'm going to turn down a job, it's likely because it's too much of a hassle, not because it's not paid well.
Do you have some works that I could reference?
This is my samplesheet, which I hand out with many bids: http://mediamainline.com/images/samples.pdf
Many of the samples provided here are easily recognizable to the local population where I live.
How long have you been working in the field?
About 5 years?
How did you know that designing/illustrating was something that you wanted to do?
Not as a child, no. I went back to school as a mature student, after having spent a decade on the road, "discovering myself".
What was your most interesting design job?
They are all so interesting, but by far my favorites are the ones which include a lot of illustration work. I just completed one b/w illustration project involving a medieval theme, requiring vector illustrations of knights and a heraldic-type shield. I enjoyed that job thoroughly, although it kept me up late into the night.
What was your most boring design job?
It's Municipal Election time in town right now. I think that answers that question. :D
