In case anybody else was curious, I found it...It's always nice when I can answer my own questions... :D

Adding Page Numbers to Master Pages

You can enable automatic page numbering within a document by adding InDesign's page-number character on the master page. Doing so keeps page numbers correct even as you add or subtract content from your document.
To add page numbers to your document via the master page, do the following:
Create a text frame on the master page where you want your page numbers to appear.
Make the following menu selections: Type > Insert Special Character > Auto Page Number
This inserts a placeholding character in the text frame which appears as a letter on the master page, but as the appropriate page number on each of the document pages based on that master.

You can change the font to anything you like for Auto page numbers. Just highlight the "A" and pick a font as usual (when in master pages). Am I missing something?

I think the OP just hadn't learned about the auto page numbers thing yet. After reading the second post it seems like that what they were really asking about.
