Hey guys,
Getting funny line breaks in Indesign with a certain Syllabic font used for writing Inuktitut.

It breaks a line before it should, words that could fit on the previous line are getting forced to the next line before their time.

I don't understand it, when I manually adjust the tracking the problem persists.

Thanks in advance.

Inuktitut... there's a word I haven't heard for a long time. Not since I left my metis girlfriend of 5 years... She knew a lot of Inuits.

I'm sorry, I don't really know what the problem could be. I don't think Indy has a window to change a font's Kerning Pair values (don't ask me why), but maybe try using Optical (manual) kerning between certain pairs, instead of adjusting the tracking.

might wanna throw on hidden characters as well, thats not the name of it, its show styles or something or other. damn im getting bad with ID help since i dont use it now. you might have an extra hard return in there causing it to go to the next line, importing from word and notepad will do this sometimes.

Did she talk about you in Inuktitut to her friends while you were in the same room Ned?

I think it is some quirky Indesign thing with the syllabics.
The same text with the same formatting in Illustrator works fine.
When I adjust the tracking and suck a line up, sometimes it shifts something earlier on in the paragraph... something foul is a foot.

Thanks though guys, I think I can scab together something that works using soft returns.

InDesign has two different methods of flowing text, the default is the paragraph composer. This will evaluate an entire paragraph to strive for the best line breaks, but in this instance, it sounds like the better choice might be to use the single line composer, that way when you manually track and/or break lines the paragraph composer won't try and evaluate the rest of the paragraph and rewrap stuff.

You can change it in the paragraph palette, or if there's a style sheet, in the Justification section of the style sheet.

No, she didn't speak Inuktitut herself. She spoke to her Cree friends about me in the same room, but with her Inuit friends, she talked about me behind my back.

Hmmm, yeah, Urstwile's suggestion of using the Single-Line Composer should do the trick for you.

To clarify a little, the option is in the Palette Options Menu (the arrowtip in the top-right corner) of the paragraph palette.

That's awesome urstwile.
Thanks so much, I knew it had to be something other than the Mac Fairy.

I'm sure the Mac fairy had something to do with it too, Eraser. :D It always does...
