Very recently, for no apparent reason that I can detect, every time I try to add a type layer, my entire image turns pink as soon as I finish defining the bounding box, and when I look at the layers palette, I notice that Photoshop has NOT created a new layer for the type. I have no idea what I've (inadvertently) done to cause this to happen. In addition, the background (or initial) layer has a paintbrush icon, and when I click on that, the normal color returns, but the bounding box for type has now disappeared.
I would be most grateful if someone could shed light on this mysterious and confounding situation.

its been a long time since I have used 6, but I would think it is in your preferences... try resetting those to default and see if that fixes it.

I have never used PS 6, but it sounds like you have the type tool set as a mask. This basically turns the text you type into a selection (via a mask), not actual text. The icon in the toolbar will look like a "T" with a dotted border around it. Click and hold the type tool in the toolbar until the flyout menu appears, and select the solid "T".

Apparently I did have the type tool set as a mask--your solution worked! I'm still struggling to teach myself how to use Photoshop, an extremely powerful tool with a fairly steep learning curve for someone like me who likes to learn by doing.

Thanks so much for your help!!

Might I recommend checking your local library for the Sams Teach Yourself Photoshop X(for version) ... for a self learner they are really good books. :)
