I currently have a 17" CRT, and it's time to upgrade to a larger LCD.
Price: Up to about $550 (calculated from our currency)
Size: 20" or 22" wide
Usage: Mainly graphic/photo-stuff, but also standard "office tasks"
What would be a decent monitor after those specs?

I would prefer a more known brand (like Samsung or Dell), and it also has to be available in my country. Not too fond of backlight bleeding either.

2x 20" dells (not wide screen) has 1600x1200... the important part
...looking for prices....
when did dell start with this call for latest pricing bullcrap?
anyways, that's my setup and I don't think I could be much happier. Any bigger and it doesn't much fit my desk. Might be a little more than 550... maybe 600 total though but that's with a year ago prices.

I have a 27" dell and i LOVE IT! :) Same screen as an LG and is one of the best for prosumer IMO...
Stay away from viewsonics and cheap crappy brands....Get the Dell if you care about color mgmt, but can't afford the high-end screens.
* I have this screen hooked up to my home theater downstairs....i can watch TV in PIP while I'm working if I want to, and even throw a DVD on and enjoy it while I work. The extra screen space is WONDERFUL - esp for tools and palettes!

I don't have a lot of money to spend, so I think two screens is out of the question. Perhaps 2 x 19" standard would be better than a single 22" wide, but I don't think I want to have two screens in front of me (would probably require a different video card to work properly anyway).
John G: As far as I can see the local Dell online store lists pricing on the website.
In this price segment, which is better? Samsung or Dell?

Yes it depends on your graphics card. I think most newer cards support it. However if you want to have both calibrated you will need one that supports multiple colour LUTs, or just get two cards.
Two screens is awesome once you get used to it.

Think i'm going for one screen, because I'm not sure if my card supports two, and I don't have the money for it.
The Samsung 244t retails for over $1500 over here, so that's out of the question.

for design work i love using widescreen now used to have 2x17" just upgraded to 2x 20.1" widescreen viewsonic's(£130 each in pc world)
(http://www.viewsoniceurope.com/UK/Products/LCDE2/VA2010wb.htm) perfect for working in Photoshop and cinema4D:D. Res 1680 by 1050.
I found that if you look at 22” the don’t run at any higher res than a 20” so I didn’t see the point unless you go all out and get 24” which I couldn’t afford and I didn’t have desk space to run two 24” screens!!!
but i would recommend Dell nice 24" with built in usb and video input

A bigger CRT?...
There's not enough space for it.
