I'd say call an artist.

I'm a designer. I produce stuff from a given set or requirements.

Through your own exploration of the problem that in-itself informs you that much more on the road to take to reach a successful resolution. Therefore, you should create your own brief. I'd have to understand a little bit more about the specific project to give you any further advice though.

yeah it's a project for uni where we can negotiated a brief, i wantted to see what other ppl would come up with. can be on any media but i want to aim at something interactive, like working in flash....

Is the class directed toward flash animation?

If not then I would probably go for something that coincides with the principles of the class.

If you do work in flash you probably don't want to have an objective like make a movie in flash. Flash should be the solution not the objective.

do something you think you'll enjoy doing but haven't done before.

It’s completely open I’ve done work in many programs (flash, director, freehand, illustrator, indesign, cinema4d, after effects, acid, vegas, photoshop, and others) and done previous projects in different media’s, I’m in my final year so I want to some that will promote myself as a designer once I have finished but I don’t want to do a personal site, i wouldn't mind doing some printbase work like a small book or poster campain

Where is a small book or a poster campaign gonna help you promote yourself as a designer more than an interactive online kickass portfolio site???

Is this your "Senior Project"? Better think hard about where you're going, what you want to do and how you want to go about showing you are ready to do it.

A guerilla advertising project would be fun.

I've also always wanted to do a "cool" pop up book. Not one for kids but one for designers and stuff.

It's blue! Just like in the TV ads!

I’m actually doing my dissertation on shock tactics (shockvertising) and guerrilla marketing techniques, so it could be pretty useful to link them together perhaps, no it’s a small 20 credit(out of 120 credits) 7 week module. I’ve thought of producing a book on problems and situations that I feel I only encounter like personal feelings about stuff and real annoying things that only seem to affect me, like you know when you pick up those little tomato ketchup packets where you have to tear the edges but when you do they never tear properly and end up everywhere! I think that if it’s illustrated well it might work.

I would like some advice from people in the industry already on what they might look for in personal portfolios? I know this might sound really open , but do they look for personal style more than a technical ability ?

I would think that would depend on the person looking. Wow them with both. That's what I say.

If the technical ability isn't there, what good is having a personal style.
When we review portfolios of freelancers we look at both style and execution. The project we hire for has a deadline. If there are problems with execution in a portfolio piece, you won't get the job.

there is a lot of information on this site about portfolios; try a forum search and you'll find lots.

You can start with the "frequently discussed topics" thread, which can be found here (http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7892). There's a whole section on portfolios in that thread.

And don't overlook the 'infrequently discussed threads'. Those GD Forum New Year party vids are certainly worth it for the shock value alone.

what happens in CNSFW stays in CNSFW... well, mostly. ;)
