I am currently designing labels for a range of products. This is my first labelproject and I am in a colour process dilemma. I want to specify the final Pantone process colour, but I think the method I have taken will not allow this.

The bulk of the label will actually be one solid Pantone Colour. The customer requires a 4cm aprox ripple effect in the middle of the label and to have it blend in with the solid colour. I have used Redfeild water ripples filter in Photoshop, but this can only be used in RGB setting. I then convert to CMYK, but this filter cannot repoduce the correct colour.

So my challenge is how can I make a ripple blend in correctly with this solid colour. Or if I cannot make the ripple correctly in the first place then any suggestions as to how I could modify the ripple in Photoshop?

Maybe there is a better filter that I am unaware of. If anyone has any advice I am all ears!

Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure about this cuz I'm not a press printer but if you are using one solid PMS color and a tint of that color, can't you do the graphic in Black and White with a screen for the tint and specify to the printer what PMS color to put on the plate?

PrintDriver is a large format digital print dude. His advice/opinions may not apply to the 4color/offset/web world of printing

What software are you using.

If you are using quark to lay out text etc, you can create your effect when in rgb, then make your artwork greyscale and adjsut your levels so that the darkest points of your design are 100% black. When imported into quark as a tiff you can assign the image a pantone colour. Then layout your text etc.

You could also do as printdriver said and design in photoshop in greyscale and then tell the printer the pantone colour. I would not recommend doing type in photoshop, especially when using a small font.

Thanks guys! You have given me lots of ideas. I am usind Photoshop/Indesign here. Bascially I am going to try and convert the CMY channels to the spot, and retain the Black channel to try and preserve some of the shadow areas of the effect. Its a tough one!

For now I am just going to use Cyan as my colour plate so I can proof the effect on our equipment here. Hmm... hours of playing coming on I think!

BTW, sorry for not putting a subject on this one... new to this whole forum thing!

Have you tried setting up that image as a duotone?

Match in the gas tank, boom boom.
