So I've been reding up about how almost all consumer level LCD monitors use Twisted Nematic (TN) technology which results in a smaller viewable angle, uneven lighting and 256k color reproduction that achieves 16.x million colors by dithering - primarily for the benefit of faster response time.

Apparently, nearly every monitor in a laptop is a TN panel. And there is currently a class action lawsuit against Apple for placing TN screens in the Macbook and Macbook pro, despite advertising them as far superior LCD screens.

But that's besides the point.

I'm wondering if the (desktop) TN panels really are that poor in quality, or if they are sufficient for design work that is not extremely color sensitive such as in photo retouching. On a GOOD TN panel is the dithering technology good enough to allow for proper design?

I can get a 22 inch widescreen dell 228FWP for $300.

My intentions aren't to ignore the quality considerations, but the money isn't there right now to purchase an IPS LCD, unless of course a TN panel is worthless, in which case buying it would be moot and I should just sell some clothes and my car and buy a nicer LCD.

Thanks for any advice!
