Hello carolsmile, I don't knowvery much about fashion design colleges, but I have visited SCAD and seriously considered taking their architecture or product design programs. I have arelativeattending SCADwho is in her second or third year of fashion design. She says it's costing her around $33,000 a year, but she's enjoying it.Have you visited the SCAD campus? If not, I strongly advise it. Find out when their next open house day is. I visited earlier this year and enjoyed myself. I think tours are given daily but at specific times. Anyway, that's my two cents andI hope it helps.

hey carolsmile...welcome!

I don't know about other colleges but I earned my BFA in Gaphic Design at SCAD in '97. It's an exceptional school...not just saying that bc I am biast either. They are ranked in the tops in Art & Design colleges. Another school is any of the Art Institutes. I don't know alot about them but they are suppose to be really great also. We have several AI grads on this board as well I think.

Seriously..if you haven't visited SCADs campus..you really should. They have just an amazing amount of things to offer. It IS expensive...but so is any other private college. When I was there, I got the personal attention that I needed from my professors and I think that's a really important thing, espiecally when you're paying so much for it. They also do alot for the students, atleast when I was there.

Where do you live? Is a visit down to Savannah possible for you, to come and visit the school? Savannah is a beautiful city. I moved here when I was 18 - to attend SCAD and I just never left..haha! Actually most of the students that I knew that left, came back bc they love it.

Good luck! If you have any questions about SCAD or Savannah, feel free to ask me k :o)

That's very cool about you attending SCAD D-Zine. Like I said, I wanted to go, and one day still might, but for now, I'm hoping to try the Art Institute Online for an associates in graphic design. Carolsmile, as D-Zine said look into the Art Institute also.I know their graphic design course is almost half of SCAD's price. Also, there is supposed to be a SCAD campus in Atlanta soon. Anyway, It seems like there are a number of members here from Georgia (like myself).

the school of hard knocks is the best

experience and knowledge plus a little bit of money

Yep...SCAD Atlanta (http://www.scad.edu/about/scadatlanta/index.html)opens in 2005.

I agree that experience is the absolute best way to learn...but without school, I wouldn't be where I am today. I think that some people need school and some just don't. I did.

Good luck in whatever you choose!

DeZiner - where in Georgia are you???

That is kinda ironic D-Zine. Seriously I doubt if we know each other, I was homeschooled all 12 years of my education. I graduated this year. I've always been interested in drawing sketching and designing. My main interest in high school was architecture, but I draw a little of everything so I'm into illustration, interior design, graphic design, and industrial design. If I could, I would get degrees in all of them! Hmmm by going to SCAD I still might have a chance eh? 5 courses at once- I'd be bankrupt before the second semester!http://www.graphicdesignforum.com//emoticons/lol.gif How about you Carolsmile? would you happen to be from Valdosta too? For all I know we might be neighbors or something!http://www.graphicdesignforum.com//emoticons/freaked.gif

Yeah - really ironic! No we probobly don't know one another...considering I graduated high school in '93..omg I feel so old now! LOL! Yeah you could get all 5 majors at SCAD at once but would be costly! Worth it tho..hehe! So are you going to college or what are your plans since you just graduated? I have one friend from high school who is a graphic designer and he still lives in Valdosta. He is working for a printer there. Are you planning on staying there ya think?

sorry - but its kinda cool to have someone from the hometown on here...LOL

My plans have changed over and over again throughout high school. I was set on becoming an architect, but that didn't quite work out -at least for now I don't think that's what God wants for me. By being interested in many fields of, it doesn't make the choice easier. However I've decided on Graphic Design for numerous reasons. (1) I love designing (2) I can earn a degree completely on-line (3) I can be a freelancer etc. It just seems that it would work out for me. Now later, I may venture into something else-that is after graphic design. Stay in Valdosta? Yeah, I'll probably be here all my life. My church is here and I'm dedicated to God and the ministry He has placed me in. I know you remember downtown Valdosta don't you? It's terrible enough to make me think about moving! I can't stand it. I always said if I became an architect, I would do all I could to change downtown Valdosta.Tell the truth, that's the real reason you left Valdosta isn't it? There is also a lack of artistic inspiration here.
As far as a college, I looked into SCAD for a long time, but I think it's too expensive for my family. I then looked at The Academy of Art, Westwood Online, and now the Art Institute of Pittsburgh Online. The Art Institute seems to offer the most for the money, though the Academy of Art is very similar. My parents like SCAD too, butlike I said It's a little out of our price range considering that my sisteris supposed to startcollege in two years. Graphic design was like the third idea on my list so just last year I made the switch to it. I'm trying to learn as much as possible about it. Well, I apologize to carolsmile, we just took over her thread, now she's going to think that all Valdostans are rude and lack manners, but it's not true, we're very nice people!http://www.graphicdesignforum.com//emoticons/biggrin.gif

Valdosta has a downtown?? Haha just kidding! Yeah...its a definate eye sore compared to downtown Savannah, that's for sure! Actually, I love my hometown. I do and I dunno why! There were a few times I considered leaving Savannah and moving back home but then like you said - the support for the arts definately isn't there like it is here! Savannah is very well versed in the arts. It's everywhere you go here and for the most part, people appreciate it here. This is my home now.

Its interesting how you find yourself places ya know. I would still be in Valdosta too probobly had VSU not denied me enrollment due to a low GPA from HS...lol! I was planning on going there and majoring in art, even tho I knew it was graphic design I wanted to do...didn't think I could swing the tuition at SCAD, and I didn't think I was good enough to get accepted. The same day I got my 'denied' letter from 'VS crap U', I got a letter from SCAD asking me to come visit the campus. So we set up an appointment with them to show them my portfolio - which at the time consisted of a buncha pieces of work from high school thrown into the trunk of the car!! LOL!! I toured the school and applied there. Got an acceptance letter a week later, with a T-shirt too - go me...LOL! If it weren't for grants and loans I would have never been able to attend SCAD. If it weren't for VS crap U denying my attendance then I wouldn't be where I am now! There is a reason for everything even tho :o)

ok sorry about the long story - haha ;o) Speaking of schools being out of the price range...that is 100% what I thought too. I remember telling my dad how much a class was when I was considering it and he was like 'thats for a whole quarter right?' and I laughed!! 'No dad - ONE CLASS! Times that by 3 for one quarter!' LOL! So I applied for grants and loans and thats what got me through it.

keep me posted on your online classes. SCAD also offers online classes but you prolly already know that - hehe ;o) I keep pluggin huh!!!

Oh yeah,I know about the on-line classes from SCAD, I've had several emails and chats with Rita, the admission representative. Was she there when you attended? I got the chance to meet her this year when we went on an open house day. I've never even seriously considered attending VSU, and probably never will. IfI do anything around here it would be at Valdosta Tech. My SAT score and GPAwas good enough to get into SCAD, but my SAT math was not enough for the Master of Architecure program. I was glad to see you posted some info about yourself, I was gonna ask you sooner or later! Oh yeah for carolsmile if she's still hanging out in this thread: If you ever come to Valdosta, ask for directions around or away from downtown! any way that you can avoid it, please do by all means!

I, personally, wouldn't waste my time getting a master's in GD unless you plan on teaching it. Won't do you any good.

I use to live in Tally myself...went to Godby high in 9th and 10th grade before moving back to Valdosta! GO NOLES! I was a huge Noles fan when I lived there! Ya gotta be...its in the air!! LOL!

I have to agree with Joe on going to get your masters. Unless you are going to teach, I really don't see it necessary at all for GD. Plus you would have to get your BFA or BA in order to get your MA or MFA correct? If so, that is ALOT of school! Not sure too many classes would transfer over from Apparel Design.

humm...would anything transfer over for the GD courses? Well thats my .02¢...lets us know what you decide!

Carol,

I would even recommend to get a tech degree instead on a BA. As said before on this forum a TON of times. Degree means crap in this field. Portfolio is everything. If you had to choose between going to school or an entry level job in the industry, take the job! Will do a lot more for you in the future.

Now if you do want to teach it, then you have to get a masters, well actually maybe not. I just saw an ad here in Orlando for this tech school looking for a gd teacher and it said BA required and MA preferred. so even then there is a little room to work with.

LOL @ BP!

Nahh..I have been in Valdosta since I was 3. My dad worked for Lowe's hardware forever...and made store manager a few years before I started HS. When I was about to start high school my dad transferred to Lowe's of Tallahasse...they wanted him to open the first superstore there. He did. We were there 2 years and then they offered him the chance to open a new superstore there and make more money, or go back to the store in Valdosta bc the new manager sucked and the sales were way down - but he would be making less money. So...my parents decided to take the job to move back to Valdosta anyways bc that was home :o) That's why we left. I went to some footbal games but was never really into football. I prefer baseball over any sport!

How old are you BP? I was at Godby from 89 - 91 you weren't in HS then I bet. Am I gettin old or what? FK! LOL
