So, I was having major hard drive problems at home. Actually, the computer is my roommate's. The tower started making clunky noises (I described them as a really loud, stuttering CD drive) that scared us... and he revealed that in all of his time of owning it, the computer was never defrag'ed. Uguh.

We got an external drive to back-up everything, and based on some advice I got from the nerdios at Mac Forums (no hard time about this, please, but yeah, I go to other forums too), we got Alsoft DiskWarrior, with the complement being an order of a new hard drive.

It showed fragmentation on the three drives of something like 18%, 29%, and 58%. Since cleaning it out with DiskWarrior, the computer hasn't made the sound again, and everything seems more healthy.

As a usual user of Norton Utilities, I am surprised to say that from now on, DiskWarrior's what I'll be using... anyone else have any opinions on either application?

Thanks for the advice. Does Mac OSX have any kind of defrag software built in?

DiskWarrior or TechTools. Either works well. Norton's kinda iffy.

Benjo, No defrag software built in.

Diskwarrior is def THE BEST disc utility, it has saved my ass from losing all the data on my drive... it was well worth the $80, instead of having mac come out and fix it for $300
as for Norton, i think it is awful... just look on apple.com's disscusion board and see how many post there are about norton messing up thier computer and how diskwarrior saved them.

i think diskwarrior and drive10 are the only things a mac owner needs
