It's the Winter Solstice!
Time to celebrate the days getting longer - in the Northern Hemisphere anyway.
Where did your holidays come from, hmmm?
:D

The sun? I've heard of it. I've yet to see it.

It's a good thing they put Christmas at this time of year.
December is about as bleak and dark a month as it is without the lights.
I'm not much of a Christmas person anymore, but I do like the lights at night.

Me too .. it gets dark so early and light so late in the morning. I love seeing the lights :)

It's actually not quite winter solstice yet, although I guess that depends on where you are in the world, as well.

I always found February to be the longest feeling month even though it's the shortest in days. There's just nothing good about that month.

And 2008 is a leap year, so February will be even longer. :(

D'OH!!!!!!!!
No offense intended seamas, but the more I look at this statement, the more I think I'm going to have an aneurysm.

Designing calendars was fun this time around, with the leap year and jacked up daylight savings.

Urst, you kill me. ;)
So the actual moment is a little after midnight tonight. Don't you celebrate on the eve of the event? LOL!

Well, no, PD, in my recollection (when I was hanging out with Wiccans, a very long time ago), the event was acknowledged on the evening (not the eve) of the event. So the celebration times would shift. :p
My memory could be failing me however, I did just hit the big 5-0. ;)
But seriously, the event signals when evening starts later, so it makes sense to me that it would be the evening (first day of the longer daylight hours) rather than the eve (before the longer daylight hours begin). :)

Still, I wouldn't mind a Christmas or two on some sun drenched beach by the Barbie, or decorating a Pohutukawa (http://www.global-garden.com.au/backissuez/0112feature1.htm) instead...

I love pohutukawa! I got my fiance to get my parents one for their Christmas present (as boys are hopeless at choosing these things)

Really?
Is it possible there are two methods of celebrating?
It's been a long time for me too. I coulda sworn it was the day before...
Hmm... could be the people I was with at the time celebrated early because it was on a weekend going into a work week or something. I honestly don't remember.

I don't remember either PD, as it's been a very long time for me as well. I don't even know anyone in that crowd anymore, so no one to ask.
