First time poster.. I'm hoping that someone can help me identify an element of type so that I know what it's called and can in turn do some research on it. What I'm talking about is the squiggly curve on top of the C that sort of ends up extending at the top:

Another more subdued example is the letter S here:

Yet another example with the extension looping to the left instead of to the right:

In case you are wondering about the reason behind my question, it's because I'm working on a design where I'd like to incorporate this element and I'd like to know the formal name of this design element so that I can hopefully find some more examples. I really like the fat psychedelic brush stroke in the third example, althought what I'm trying to do is curve it up and to the right, and probably without a loop. Thanks in advance..

If you like that psycadelic type of type "boom cha" then have a look at some posters from the Fillmore gigs of the 60s and 70s, like Bill graham or Wes Wilson ones.

This has a comprehesive glossary of Type terms.

swash letter
A letter with one or more added ornamental strokes (which are sometimes called flourishes). Most common in italic typefaces; often created as an alternate to an unadorned version of the letter.

Jade: thanks for tying everything together for me
Frankster: 60's concert posters are a great inspiration for ways to mold different letters

You know that if you look at those posters while on acid they look perfectly straight and conservative. ;)

I call those letters swashes too.

I have never looked at those posters on acid. Must remember to next tome ;)
