Over the holidays I had the wonderful opportunity to read not one, but two books and see a movie I would highly recommend.
The first book was "My life with Marley", its all about a family and their insanely loveable dog. I laughed out loud so many times reading it. (warning: you will cry near the end)
The second book I am still reading (only have a chapter or 2 to go) it's called "Kite Runner". some of you may have heard of controversy regarding it. I have to warn you that it is a bit difficult to read becuase of the anguish that this young man suffers, but well worth the read in what (at least I) learned about the afghan culture and many other reasons. There is a wonderful quote from the book I'd like to share.
"There is only one sin in life, and that is stealing". I never thought about it that way, but it is true. If you murder someone, you have stolen someone's father, son, brother, etc....
Obvuiously this book has moved me a great deal.
The movie (that I found in the $1.99 bin at walmart) was titled "water". It is and indian movie (not bollywood!) and subtitled. beautiful music also. The story revolves around hindu widows who are given 3 choices in life once thier husband dies: burn with him, choose to live in utter seclusion (and be treated like a disease) or, if t he family consents (rarely they do) they may marry his younger brohter provided he has one.
Again, I was very moved by this film and I highly recommend it, but again be prepared to cry.
One wonderful quote from ghandi from this film:
"I used to think that truth was God, but now I know that God is truth".
