I've been asked to design a Powerpoint slide for an ad, and was wondering... what would be the typical size that would be appropriate? Should I go a screen size of 1280 x 1024, and let them size appropriatly? Don't know if anyone has ever had this kind of project before!

what kind of an ad would you need a powerpoint slide for?

Close!! It's an ad for a conference coming up that will be displayed at another conference of about 2000 people... slides with ads are put up in between sessions... make more sense now? I was just going to send them a TIF file to insert into the slide.

That should work. Go with the biggest screen size possible (whatever that may be), and they can always shrink it.
But you don't want them to enlarge it.

^what he said^

also ask your client what it is going to be projected on? they might just be doing 8.5X11 slides and projecting them on a screen. We do it al lthe time here at the university.

You may want to consider the projector specs as well, some are different than others but to be safe you could do as you mentioned.
