Does any one have an opinion on the differences between the term 'logo' and 'brand'?
Do you think they are one of the same thing or do you think their is a distinct difference between the two terms?

There is a distinct difference. A logo is a symbol to identify the company. While the brand includes a logo, it also encampasses other things like campaigns and the contrived way that the company is perceived by the public.

Example, this is a logo. It is tradition, expression, script. It's text and it's a name.

But the coke brand is much more than that. The coke brand is enjoy, life, excitement, active, modern, young. Coke brand is red, the unique bottle silhouette, the white ribbon. Coke brand is mega-corp, sponsorship, world domination.

At least that's what they want us to think.

Anyone can make a good logo, but to create a successful brand takes a lot more.

I personally think they are different.
Your logo is the icon or name that depicts your company.
Your brand is the overall picture, image, atmosphere and culture you represent, from your stationary, offices, environment through to your personnel, methods of working and ethos.

CocaCola's logo is the squirlly lettering, their brand is the way we see them and interact with them.

damn it buda, yeah beat me - kinda strange we chose the same brand as an example!!

That's because Coke has one of the most recognisable branding campaigns. That or because we're both cool :)

Your brand is the overall picture, image, atmosphere and culture you represent, from your stationary, offices, environment through to your personnel, methods of working and ethos. I was going to edit something about stationary, offices and fleet, but you bet me to it.

Also, just slapping a logo on something isn't branding it.

Example, putting an Apple logo on a PC doesn't make it an Apple product. A successful brand should almost be recognisable when the logo is removed.

Example, you take any imac and an ipod and remove all logos. The product should still ooze the brand. Same goes for advertising for a certain company. You recognise a mac ad even before you see the logo. That's because you have recognised the brand.

I agree with this.

so would it be acceptable to say:

an icon without wording or logotype would generally be considered as a 'logo'
or
a brand name maybe considered as a 'logo' although it is part of the 'brand'

you're off on both counts. a logo is a piece of a brand, but a brand is a lot more than the printed image. it's more of an esoteric feature of a company, albeit one with strict guidelines both visual and non-visual.

for example, Kleenex will tell you that they are a "brand" of tissue, like Hasbro will tell you that their brand of flying disc is "Frisbee." both terms Kleenex and Frisbee are trademarked, as are their logos that represent the respective brand.

but there's much more to a brand than just a logo.

there's a start for you. the rest you should be able to find if you look hard enough.

A logo is the mark by which a company is identified. It can be an icon with (such as Coke) or without logo type (such as Nike.) Whether or not it has wording it can still be a logo.

Brand is what Jam said. It's everything that your company exudes. It includes the logo. But it's the feeling people get using your product or services, the environmental space of your offices, the opinion people have of your company, it's all of your marketing material, your logo included.

Even though I do agree it sounds like a homework question.

no, not at all. look up the definitions. they are in no way the same thing. think of a brand as an image (a perception, not a visual thing). everything that goes into the image of the company is part of its brand; including a logo.

But 'tesco' is a brand, it is also the trademark or logo

Every company has a brand, even if they don't have a logo.

The brand is the overall perception of a company, including intangibles such as attitude, feelings people have towards them, taglines, catch phrases, words associated with them, etc. A companies overall brand also usually has a logo as part of it.

I'm not sure why there's the confusion.

Ah! sorry if you're confused but there is no confusion as far as I'm concerned! The original question was one of opinion and to create a discussion

A logo is just one vehicle for a brand.

A brand is essential a companies persona.

A logo is a visual representation of that persona.
