Hi Everyone..I am new to this site and thought I would give it a shot to see if anyone had any insight to my problem. I am working on an ad for a client and the only logo file they have for me is a low res flattened psd file. When i open the file, its a locked file and the res says its only a 72 dpi. Is there anyway of doing anything with this file? I told the client that i needed the original photoshop file but they no longer have access to it. Any thoughts? They don't want to spend the money to have me redo the logo since its not a quick redo.

Why would a client not have access to their own logo files? Or did their old designer bone the job and only make it in Photoshop. <hack, cough>
Or maybe they never paid the original designer for the files, in which case a redraw would be unethical.
anyway, there is not much you are going to do with a 72dpi file.
You can unlock it by clicking on the file once and going to File>Get Info and unlocking it there.

If the logo is not too complicated (as any good logo should be), you would do well to take the image into Illustrator and create a vectored version. I am imagine your client would be happy to pay for it once you explain the benefits (scalability, cross capatibity, etc...).

Apparently they had originally hired a graphic designer to create the logo and have only used it on their website so far. They have tried to contact the old designer but she has since left the design firm. It all sounds weird to me as well that they don't have the original file. I didn't think there was anything that I could do...but I told them I would ask around. Thanks for the replies!

sounds fishy to me!

No, it would be fishy if they were willing to pay for it no questions asked.
My guess is they got an 'online' logo. Even if the former designer left the design firm, they at least should have a record of the job.
Print it and tell them its going to look like sh*t unless you redraw it.

My thoughts too. If you are indeed going to redraw in Illustrator this so that it is a vector logo, make sure you get payment or at least a decent deposit before you start.

Garbage in, garbage out. Works for code, works for design.

You can only work with what your given, unless of course they want to pay you to duplicate the logo. Seems more of a hassle than anything. The only other thing i could think of, is if this is a large enough order for you to just bite the bullet and design it over...just to cinch the deal.

I don't do it for free.
And the OP says it's not an easy redo.
Time is money.
tZ's advice is pretty good. Size it, print it, and show it to them. If they like it, hold your nose and do it. If they don't, maybe then they'll pony up the needed cash.
