I've been looking all over the web for a template for an insert thats more than 2-4 pages and I can't find one. I am supposed to be designing a 20 page booklet for a CD and I am unsure how to map out the pages myself in indesign. Does anyone know of some templates? or know how to lay them out in indesign. The help is much appreciated.

Are you asking about how to do a page Imposition?
Ask your printer if you even have to.

There's several ways of doing this.

1) if the printer is set up with a particular workflow, they just need the stand-alone pages to put into their system, and out pops the booklet.

2) if the printer requires a spread, then you make the facing pages of the spread. This trips up a lot of people because when the book is folded to make sure the pages are in proper order.

Spread Tip: if it is just going to be folded and "stapled" in the middle, then take a few pieces of paper and fold them. You'll find that this method is a multiple of 4.

Then once folded, take pen and mark the page numbers. Once you seperate the pages, then you'll have an idea of what page goes where in a spread.

Then you can mimic the pages in an InDesign file for placement.

Always ask the printer how they require the files, so that you don't have to set them up twice.

I don't know many printers that want designers doing imposition for them. Most of the time they redo it anyways in my experience.

True. I don't mind printers pairs (readers pairs are a big no-no), but often we do more than 2up on a sheet so I end up imposing their supplied imposition.

Talk to your printer, but best to supply a pdf file 1up with a printed and stapled mock up so the printer knows exactly what the end result should be.

thanks for the advice. And Drazan that was a good idea with the folding the paper.

I'll have to talk to my client about where they wan't to get it printed.

Maybe this is an odd question, but do you also need to make sure that the CD cover can take 20 pages in those little plastic guides? 20 pages, and staples might be getting to thick to get in or out, unless you have super fine paper!

I just did a 20 page booklet and it fits fine. We were only using 100gsm paper (i think) and there is heaps of space, plus there is no noticable creep.

Good point Ella. Shizneb, have you tested how thick 20 sheets of the paper that you will use is? Will it fit?

I don't know, the client has set up everything with the printer, so I know little about the paper being used at the moment, but I was checking out some booklets in some of my other CDs that I bought wich are also about 20 pages and it seems to work out fine. But I told him to let me know where he has chosen to get his printing done and I will speak to them. I am waiting for his phonecall today.

Shizneb, We have a trade partner that does some specialty stuff for us (music and video industry related printing).

I just looked at their site to see if they had templates for this so you would have a general idea. The have one for a 32 page, so it may give you a general idea until you can talk with the client and printer where yours will be printed.

The link to the template is right above the price calculator.

Keep in mind that this company's layout probably won't be the same as your printer... just putting it here for you and others to reference.
