I have this client who insists on designing their own newsletter. Then they send it to me (with RGB images, low res etc) and we hash out the issues. I won't even go there....

One of the biggest issues is her Quark 7 conversion to 6.5. I know you have to export as layout and have even read that you might have to do this twice renaming the file in order to work.

Well I am stuck at this second step.....the file will preview but crashes my quark upon opening. I'm stuck.

Please don't suggest upgrading for the mere $300 to quark 7 as my employer doesn't seem keen on spending any more money on art dept (just got a new Mac).

suggestions? I have googled it, but nothing has worked.

We are having the same problem here at work dangermouse. Luckily for me I should be getting a brand new computer and software updates in a few weeks :D 8 cores ::drool::

Anyways - Back on subject - If anyone has an answer I would love to hear it. It will make these two weeks go by more quickly.

Nice on the new computer...we WERE looking at a Imac, but I decided against it...they are more a home computer than a studio one.

to avoid upgrade cost issues from CS2 to CS3, we went with a suped up G5 dual with 4 gigs over the new 8 core MacPro. Not my choice, but better than what I had.

Last quarter when i had this issue I send to contact who did it for me. That contact is unavailable to me today.

So annoying.

I wonder if they added quark 7 specific functions like transparency or something.

annoying doesn't even begin to cover it. I had a customer send over the file 3 different times before I gave up and told him to make a pdf ... then he didn't specify the spot colors correctly and had to resend that ... grrrrr

Yep that's the only way I know-export, layout then choose ver.6. Are you sure they are saving down correctly and it only gives you ver.6 option to choose from not 6.5. which is ok. It could be a goofy font issue. Are you loading the clients fonts first? What you could do is deactivate all your fonts then try to open or do the reverse, leaving their fonts opened only instead.

No Jim, I am pretty sure they ARe NOT following my export instructions and I been corresponding with them over it all morning. I have other work to do and this has just been a thorn in my arse.

What it is ....is that the "designer", which they are NOT, shouldn't be throwing this together at all...they have absolutely no prepress knowledge, but I have to give them credit getting this far. But I have been basically fixing all the issues for them. Happens every issue even though I have documented notes for the designer to consider before sending....simple things like (how to collect for output, how to make pdfs ((which they still havent done correctly)), resolution and format requirement for images, linking images CMYK vrs RGB....and so on and so on..... basically I documented a little prepress manual for them. Still it comes to me this way. I been waiting on a low res PDF for 3 days now.
But really.... RGB to CMYK...they can't even get THAT down.
From my superiors here, I am just to cater to them, which is fine. But this newsletter being late (because of BS) is going to hold up the whole overall project (whcih I have been voicing). But who do you think will have to do some OT because of last minute crap AND because THEY dont have their shit together.Anwyays...I ramble and bitch and if I continue this post will be moved to the bitching thread.

I just sent the file to my printer, I am pretty sure Ill get it back soon no problem.

I 'll test the font idea too.

The other thought I have is if you have Quark 6 loaded on another machine, give it a go there also.

hi peeps - i had this myself a while back, what version of Quark 6 are you running?

I was using 6.5 but had these issues, an upgrade to 6.5.2 fixed things for me. Let me know if this helps.
