Indesign help...

I just created a large layout and am not super great at Indesign yet. Why are some of the pages in my layout template white and others have a gray/white checkerboard pattern?

The pages with "gray/white checkerboard pattern" contain transparency. (drop shadows, opacity adjustments, layered PSDs etc.)
