Is this a school project? Is it a completely ficticious product? Is the company name/producer "the cult of condiments"? (that part is very hard to read by the way). Colours look based on the first google image for "chutney label", but having said that, the greens are pleasing. Think about how this will look wrapped around a jar. How big is the jar and how far will the label wrap around it? Really try to visualise how the object will look in your hand, not just flat on the screen.

If it's a real product then you should provide a lot more info on what the client wants to represent as far as image goes and who it is supposed to appeal to. If it's a made up product for a school project then it would also help you to try and focus a bit more on what you want the packaging to say about the product and who you think you should be aiming it at as far as demographics go. It'll help you come up with something focused rather than generic.

Reverse and repeat. Yawn.

As far as I know, Sicilian peppers are 'Cubanelle' or 'Sweet Italian' peppers. Not spicy at all. Neither is the Italian Pepperoncini.

Sorry for the lack of info. "Cult of condiments" is a fake company for an online contest. This brand is suppose to be a more expensive, but high quality condiment producer. The label is suppose to be eye catching, and show that it is worth the money.

Also, I am only allowed to use a limited amount of photos they provided >_<

I don't have info on the jar specs, but the label must be 2.5x4.

also thanks for the info... i suppose I need to refine it more...

should have just posted this in the first place

Project: A design for the label of a jar of chutney.

Client: The client, The Cult of Condiments, has created a line of specialty condiments. The latest is a spicy organic chutney, an addition to its line of unique condiment creations, typically sold in boutique specialty shops.

Audience: The consumer has an infatuation with condiments, expecting them to deliver new taste sensations, while remaining true to their ingredients. The organic nature of the ingredients, and the Sicilian peppers, are thus important to this market segment. Shelf space is crowded, so this design must immediately catch the shopper's attention, promising unique, Italian-derived flavors, with a modern presentation. Forget straw-covered Chianti bottles.

Design Requirements: The maximum dimensions of the design should be in a ratio that will work for the label size of 4 inches wide by 2.5 high, with a rectangular shape preferred unless there is a good reason for an alternative. A sophisticated use of color and typography will be a fit with the company's brand and help justify its premium price tag. Photos illustrating concepts related to the product have been provided from the AbleStock.com (http://www.ablestock.com/) collection, but alternative or supporting imagery from the stock.xchng (http://www.sxc.hu/browse.phtml?f=search&txt=peppers&w=1) site, or other sources for which the designer has permission, may also be used. The following text must be included:
The brand name: The Cult of Condiments
The product name: Italian Spicy Chutney
Product description: A classic vegetable blend fired with Siciilan peppers
Claim of ingredients: Organic Deadline: Designs must be submitted by February 19, 2008.

Sounds extremely spec-like to me. I wouldn't do it.

lose the symmetry it isn't working

shouldn't there be nutrition facts and information?

doesn't appear as if you client has thought this through.

seems like they are just having you design a pretty graphic then something that actually needs to function.

It wouldn't be spec work since no one will be using the designs for their own use and profit. It wouldn't be a contest of the sort Jeff Fisher promotes either. It would be more along the lines of what we sometimes recommend of creating an identity for a fictitious company or looking through a phone book and redesigning a ramdom company for practice. Although I wouldn't enter something like this I don't really have a problem with it.
