I like the worn look on the blue border used here, but I'm not sure how to replicate textures such as these.

Is it just a texture scanned from some abstract object and then used as a mask? or is there a way to do this type of effect in photoshop with a solid border? I'm more of an Illustrator / InDesign guy, and am trying to learn some photoshop techniques.

By the way, I'm new here, just joined yesterday... hello to everyone!http://www.graphicdesignforum.com//emoticons/thumbsup.gif This is an awesome way to talk and network with other designers!

you can download some 'grunge' brushes for photoshop that can create that effect.

or you can make your own 'grunge effect'... here how i go about doing it:
get a photo (textured surfaces work great).. covert it to grayscale, then give it a 'center source' inner glow of white... now flatten the image and do image>adjustments>threshold... and BAM, 'instant grunge border!'

Look through the recent posts on here. The worn/grunge look was covered recently and there were some good recs in there. :)

Graphic Design Heroes! Call me Captain Type Caster. I’ve fought off “The Evil Cosmic Sans” for year but it seems “Dr. Extreme Untalent” keeps bringing him back. I must find a way to defeat this evil creature.

Capt. Creative bring me those comps…
