I have some older postscript fonts that are being replaced with new open type fonts.

I had Adobe Type Manager managing the old ones but removed those and ATM, now the open type faces I got (futura) isn't being replaced automatically in documents that I used it in, instead it's warning me about missing fonts and then replacing with myriad or something.

Is there a way to slap illustrator and Ps around to make it a little smarter and find the close font name or do i need a font management system to do this?

Thanks

Not that I know of, nor do I know of a way to get those two programs to automatically substitute one font with another of a different name, even if they are the same font visually.

Surprisingly, Word lets you map substitution fonts, but that's no help to you, of course.

Don't bet on them being the same. We get variation in the Times font depending on which OS it came out of. They varied over the years as far as kerning goes, etc.

You'll just have to do the Find Font shuffle.

Additionally, OpenType fonts use Unicode encoding. If you've used any Type 1 expert sets, they won't convert properly.

It's not such a problem for me, because I have only a few "reused" documents, and updating the style sheets in Indy was a one-time thing. I just build the time in to update Illy files as I need them.

I'm in an in-house creative department, so it's not as big a deal to spend the time.
