We are hiring a temp to fill in for me whilst I'm out after surgery. My supervisor has said I can basically do this myself. They used Sperion to hire me, but they really knew nothng about GD. Anyone got any good ideas on placess I should call to get a good (at least 2 yrs experience) short term contract GD? Also, any advice on interviewing? I will certainly be testing them on InDesign, etc...but I'm not always sure of the right questions to ask.

Brie, by reading your location I am guessing your somewhere near Tampa, Lakeland, Orlando... all large areas.
Have you looked in one of those areas yellow pages for "Staffing" or "Temporary Agencies"? I would look at their ads and see if they mention GD professionals.
Have you thought about posting here in the classifieds? There are always lurkers who don't join in who may be in your general area.
Best wishes on the surgery and hopefully you find someone qualified so you dont come back to a mess.

Creative Hotlist
AIGA
Aquent
Coroflot
all come to mind (a quick google will bring them up). Look through a few listings to get an idea of the line of requirements they ask for.

I'd request a portfolio review, then ask questions related to how they created or arrived at their final work, to get a gauge on their knowledge and whether they'd be a good fit for the position. Usually you can tell if they're playing it off (I'm sure some folks still use the age old trick of "borrowing" other folk's work to pad their portfolio).

Thanks GNP and Seapony. I couln't remember the names of any of them! I did some searching and got Aquent and of course there's always Kelly also here there is Appleone, but I heard some bad stuff about them. I need to be interviewing at least one person everyday for the next two weeks. I need at least a week to train (at least) so I need someone fast! I'm going to ask my supervisor if I can try and get anyone like freelance or from here, but this is a large corporate deal and they usually have rules about hiring temps through agencies. I'm really worried I won'[t be able tof find someone competent in time! I called Spherion last week, on friday they sent me 2 resumes, one was just not a good fit at all and I just interviewed the other, her portfolio was very weak and I don't she has enough layout experience to work out.

Hmmm. A working vacation to Florida sounds pretty sweet right about now to this Wisconsinite. :)

Find the freelancer you want and have them sign up with the temp agency. ;)

Make sure you give them a little test first to see that they know their stuff.
Feel free to post that little test here for us to gander at :)
I wish I'd made a little test when we were hiring.

As a student graduating in May, I'd love to see what that test is also.
Hey, why not contact the local schools to get names of students who have already graduated and may be looking?

I would say that a student that has just graduated doesn't really have what it takes for temping. Temping means you're covering for someone that is absent.
Students are better suited for junior roles where they can be supervised by someone more experienced.

I think she said she was looking for at least a couple years of post graduate work.

That does make sense. Thanks!
I'd still be interested in seeing the test.
