It seems every 12 or 18 months I have to post something like this so here goes.
The very first post posted here at the GDF by our founder Allen Harkleroad was a welcome to the forum, a place where graphic designers of ALL skill levels and abilities could share their passion for design in all it variations. The second post was regarding our behavior in doing so. Basically it said be nice, a very simple concept that some of us seem to forget from time to time. We were all newbies at one time, none of us sprang from the womb knowing that CMYK was for print and RGB was for web or that vector was the best format for logos. We learned these things and we should be happy to pass on our learning to others, and if we don't feel like it then we should move on to a thread that does interest us. There really is no requirement that we reply in some form to every single post. Treat others in the same way that we would like to be treated ourselves, it's called the golden rule and I have found it to be a fine way to live. If you can't then there are other forums where different philosophies are practiced, perhaps you would be more happy in one of them.
Thank you,
Your friendly moderator,
Kool. http://koolsplace.com/images/koolsmiley.gif

'Tis true. Sometimes when a person it types out a reply it can be mis-read and interpreted differently then what was meant. A reply might "sound" different then what was intended...
That's all I have to add. :)

Heheh, I was going to "go snarky" but I restrained myself in light of the serious undertones of your poignant post. See? I'm all nice-nice, all the time. Mostly. Sometimes. Ocassionally.

Too true. Never underestimate the power of a well placed emoticon to push your sentiments beyond the virtual barrier...

and that's the very point I was going to make. Since it is a purely text medium of communication, it's necessary to go a little bit out of one's way to make sure the tone and the meaning are clear.

An article I just read might help to put in perspective what it's like to be new to this field and still learning some of the stuff that many of us take for granted:

Is it still going to be ok to fish-slap anybody who starts a mac/pc war what with that subject being covered extensively in the FAQ?

Actually that brings up a good point. Although the proper debate should be Windows vs Mac since PC is just a generic term for any computer that runs windows and they can run the gambit from low end Walmart specials to high end gaming machines.
Actually though with the ever changing technology we need to have one of these debates every year or so simply because the arguments that were true a few years ago aren't necessarily valid anymore. Feel free to fish slap anybody who says Macs are better just because they are though. ;)

What a pile of crap. :)
Not really. Just proving a point that the emoticons sometimes can't even cover up crap. Good post Kool. I like the idea of not being so quick to pounce on folks and biting your tongue. Mines got lot's of scars. See? :p
edit: that worked out perfectly in the timing of posts for my first line to follow Kool's last line. :D

On that note of being nice, I noticed if anyone gets even a little defensive (which is natural) there is a quickness for everyone else to just pounce on that poster as if we are all waiting for it to escalate, making the situation even more heated. There are many threads that got heated when they really didn't have to. Smart ass answers are way too common in here...I mean really...why bother posting JUST to be a smartass? I am not talking about humorous comments, I'm talking just being rude.
Yes we all have moody days where we would be less tolerable to people than usual....my suggestion is that if you are having one of these days you really shouldn't be posting that day. I wouldn't assume just because you are a regular that everyone is going to "get" your angle or personality.
Cheers to this thread Kool. I think for the most part this IS a warm and friendly place, but reminders like this seem to be needed every now and then.

Danger_Mouse: Well said. A few times I have refrained from posting for that very reason. I have even ignored this site for a week or so just cause I was unhappy about something that MIGHT have gone down...

man, give it up already. Please respect the fact that everyone is entitled to their opinion, and that PCs are perfectly capable of doing the job, no matter what your personal preference is.
The mac/pc thing is outdated, and done to death, and we don't do it here.

Oh come on, lighten up! I know both exist, i use em both daily!
And as someone who has the right to share their opinion publically, and be entitled to it, I see no reason why i couldn't pipe in w/ that small commment - meant more as a joke anyways....maybe you should chill out and not be so sensitive to the topic in general, i notice you comment on it a lot.

DesignVHL...you should really read what I just posted. I don't see how your comment above was at all necessary.
A simple " I was joking" would have sufficed I am sure...instead you had to poke with a sharp stick. (shakes head)

I've steared clear of a lot of the showcase threads for a while for this reason. I'm far too incendiary to be allowed in a lot of them it seems. For proof of my ability to derail a thread into a shoutathon, please see exhibit A...

It is tempting sometimes to wind up someone on the other end of the internet just for the hell of it, but when that urge strikes, these days I take it out on the telesales people. ;) Oh and also if my husband says something as mundane as "Do you know where the sugar is?" I can wind him up by saying "You're the sugar!". Works in all situations. "Shall we get the kids in the car to go to Safeways?", "You're safeways!". "Sue and Ben asked if we'd like to go to thier house for some tapas". "You're sue and ben/a house/tapas!"
Every day you should all wake up and thank your lucky stars that you are not married to me. ;) :D

OMG! I do that to my fiance too! Though it's his fault because he started it when we first got together. I was commenting on how cool his friends lounge was because it was so big. He responded with "You're a big lounge" as a compliment. Now whenever he suggests something I tell him "You're a --insert noun here--".
