I'm hoping this isn't violating the rules on the thread or bothering anyone. But I have a question I would like helping out on because I really can't think of any ideas. The idea of this thread is to conjure up some ideas if that's okay.
Basically; we've had a project at Uni, which is to subvert a barcode and basically adapt it into a form as an illustrative or graphical style.
Examples:
Image of a shopping trolley is altered to appear as a barcode; emphazing consumerism on shopping.
Santa's beard is replaced with black barcode stripes, showing that christmas is an excuse to spend huge amounts of money.

Both examples sound like a good idea, were those from your instructor, or are they your personal thoughts? If they are your thoughts, open Illy and get started. If not, brainstorming with a pad and pencil should get you on the right track. :)

Tis true. But you don't use the barcode on the box for what it is used for. Know what I mean?

I've always had this zebra/barcode idea in my head. Just googled it and looks like it's already been done.
Maybe you could try a white tiger? Or any striped animal for that matter.

I didn't do it! Just found it on Google. Just always wanted to do some kind of zebra/barcode stencil. Maybe I still will.

What about using it as a block knife holder? Have a bunch of handles of knife at the top (from this angle: http://barkriverknives.com/albums/2/Forester_Top_View.jpg)...
Could be related to 'slashing prices' (?)

I like Banksy's barcode cheetah stencil:

the original is on a wall in Bristol ( i think) and It's brilliant.

Wow, I'm impressed with the amount of responses in this short amount of time. And yes GraphixNPrint, my tutor gave me these ideas in the brief.
Thanks for the links guys, I'll look into it and post some results!
Any more resources, then just fire away.

I'm not sure where I saw it but I once saw a retail package that used a graphic image which joined the top of the bar code. some of the lines extended up above the barcode to form stems for flowers. Pretty simple idea but is a little different from your brief in that the barcode remains intact and useful.
Welcome to the forum Rambot! Good luck on your project! Would love to see what you come up with.

Some more barcodes float around. Many of these are scannable and are used on real packaging.

just a quick clipping mask in illy...
I am actually finding clipping masks to be very hard to achieve. When I did those barcodes I had to work around them, is there a website that has a tutorial about clipping masks?
